174k, Transmission lost 2nd gear engine braking and 6th gear (1 Viewer)

Figured I might as well include these. P0729 with another DTC indicates a solenoid. It doesn’t note my lack of engine braking but since gears 2 and 6 share a planetary gear and the B2 brake (clutch) handles 2nd gear braking and 6th gear engagement it seems likely they’re the same solenoid.

Now the bad news is that the second code, P2714, implies “if you drive it like this for 350 miles from Silverton to Golden you probably should expect what is possibly a solenoid problem to burn out your transmission clutches due to low trans oil pressure.”

So Slee’s recommendation makes sense. Not sure I could’ve saved the transmission by having it towed anyway, nevermind the $1500 quote from the towing shop in Silverton to do so.

I think mostly I’m disappointed it’s not just a valve body replacement because I was hoping this would be an excuse to upgrade to the Nomad heavy duty one.

Sparkly bits.

Sparkly bits don’t belong in transmission fluid. Is the torque converter going to be ok, or is that part of the transmission replacement?

Forbidden glitter….

I’m assuming you’re replacing transmission, can you upgrade valve body in the new tranny?

I'm waiting on their quote to see what is spec'ed out, but I assume a new TC will be part of it. Ben at Slee had mentioned "you always new a new TC when you do a transmission".

They're likely getting a Toyota reman unit, so I could but it's just extra and probably voids the warranty.

My gut says the root cause was a solenoid going out, and not catching that immediately meant premature clutch (and brake) wear. Slee said they weren't saying the clutches were shot, just that there's evidence of excessive wear and replacing the transmission is their recommendation. They did think that a bad solenoid would result in burnt fluid but not necessarily metal in the fluid (unless it's really worn I suppose), but again although I tried to mostly avoid 2nd and 6th gear ultimately I knowingly drove 350 miles like this...

Do the Nomad valve bodies come with new solenoids? (if not, I'm not sure they would've held up any better)

I think the nomad is just the valve body. Those solenoids are $200 each and there’s a bunch of them. My reman transmission came with torque converter.
You could get wholesale automatic transmissions to custom build one. I know many of use would like to get feedback on that. AND you could get it in several colors!

Of course it’s from the Aussies. I’m sure there are shops in the US that can build these but finding the specific Toyota specialty tranny shop would be needle in haystack.

I’d be tempted to go this route versus OEM only because of my use case. Stock daily driver, OEM all day…fat heavy built out tow rig, Aussie special style is looking interesting. The shipping to US would be a killer though.

Is yellow or purple faster?

At double the cost I’d struggle to convince myself it was necessary, but regardless any chance of that is lost with a 13 week lead time sadly. If it said 4 weeks…

Cruisers and company in the USA sells the valve body kits. They also sell the transmissions but only for the 80 series. I bet they’d at least handle import…

“Upgrading valve body for towing” rabbit hole was not on my to do list today…

Also, yellow would be my choice. Easier to see that expensive piece of gear.

Reman Toyota trans and TC, new fluid, flush the lines, new rear main seal (because it’s right there). $6900 + tax.

@linuxgod does tc come with oem Toyota transmission or separate part number?
I had the same question. I asked and was told the price includes a new torque converter. Not sure if it’s included in the part # listed online but it’s included in the job

Geoff, glad the path forward is defined.

Thanks. Me too. I know a dealer could have swapped a transmission, but it’s reassuring to have Slee examine it first and not just default to “oh you need a new transmission”. And to know they’ll have an opportunity to go over the mechanical bits of the entire truck while it’s in there and evaluate any weak points.

Wish I could have done more to help. But I am happy to be helping eat your food that you didn’t want to spoil.
