New paint color to be chosen by the 80 Series Tech crowd.

ToddD,
I have enjoyed seeing all of the great suggestions. My rig is black, has a great paint job and is in great working order. Having said that, I have often thought about what I would do if $$s were not a problem and I could entirely strip and rebuild a second 80 to my OCD liking.
Anyone who ownes just one and says they never thought about having a second is either a fool or a liar.
What color would it be...
Interior would have to be grey, but the exterior would be Ecurie Ecosse Blue. Standox makes the color and I believe Sandox is owned by DuPont.

Link to EE

Link to forum with an Aston Martin DB2 for color example.

I can certainly understand budget, personal preference, wheeling damage, maintenance, etc.
But that blue would look good with some black steel NATO wheels.

Tan is about as good as it gets IMO.

I was going to respray mine in the 40th anniversary winter blue colour, but i think ill be going tan when the time comes.

My favorite LC color? Galactic Gray...

My vote is for single stage urethane in the 6M1 green -without the metallic in a FJ55 scheme with a white roof and hood. That's what mine will get someday...

No jamb painting, but old school and cool.

In the meantime I rattle canned the worn center part of my hood satin black, looks good for less than $20.

I posted this over in Paint and Body but all I hear are crickets in that forum so I'm posting up in Tech.

PICK MY PAINT COLOR! THE COLOR WITH THE MOST VOTES WHEN I AM READY TO PAINT WINS!!
I can't decide between staying original with the 6M1 Green or white, or black, or etc... so you get to pick.

I'm about to start prepping my 80 for paint and I want to pound out a couple dents the best I can.
What's the best way to prep the car?
What tools should I reach for?

The last car I painted was a 67 VW bug when I was a teenager. Wet sand and spray cans.
My rig is 6M1 Dark Emerald Pearl and it's in horrible shape. There's no way I can make it worse so no reason not to paint it myself! :thumb:

The running boards and brush guard have been removed and it already looks better. I'm resurfacing the wheels as well. I'm not sure if I'm going to paint them or leave them bare aluminum. Maybe black or graphite..

WHAT THE ****, PICK MY WHEEL COLOR TOO!!!!

It's getting a new windshield after painting is done.
The rear dent I think I can pop out alright but the door is going to be some work.
I have been overwhelmed by the paint info on the web I've been reading and really hope to find a simple way to do it.
Any tips are appreciated.

  :hhmm:

Hopefully, since I want the dudes in Tech to pick the colors this thread can stay in Tech?!

ToddD,

Noticed in your picture of your LC that most of the paint damage in on your hood.

I noticed that my LC is very hot under the hood (even after complete coolant system replacement) and mentioned something to Lance at Iron Pig. He told me that LCs are very hot under the hood hence the black insulation hood liner. Apparently its not to keep the engine warm in winter but to protect the paint job of the hood! He also noted that is why there is an insultation box for the battery!

So check to see if you still have that liner under your hood. If not, you might want to replace it prior to painting the LC.

BTW - I really like all of the new Cruiser color scemias: yellow and white, blue and white etc.

I don't have any insulation on the hood. I've actually been looking into that. I'm going to insulate and install hood vents.
I do have a new temp gun to play with. I should take some temps.

it is a land rover green, but other than a promo dodge ram color that they offered for a limited time, it is my favorite shade of green I have ever seen on a vehicle.

I have what borderlines an unhealthy obsession with green, it has always been my favorite color :hillbilly:

Nice choice! or the or the late 70's FJ40 Rustic green.

Plus easier with the firewall, door jambs etc.

I want the 30 minutes of my life back.. Talk about a let down.

I'm going Aggie maroon with charcoal wheels and trim when I do mine this year. But I have access to my dads paint booth and equipment.

Once my bro in law pointed out my 80 is the Philadelphia eagles color scheme I had to get rid of that.

7 months later....

Can't believe it's been 7 months since I wanted to get on with this project.
Not much to update today. I haven't proceeded with this because of $$ but I'm tired of waiting. So the pig is going into the garage for prep work.

I'm keeping the flares and mud flaps, although the flaps look aged, I'm still planning on keeping them, at least for now.
The stock roof rack is going away.
Still not sure about the rear wind deflector.
I'm going to try to have Treeroot style louvers pressed into the hood, if I can't get that done I'll install the GTO style ones I've seen on here.
It'll get a new windshield.
I'm going to install side turn indicators in the fenders or do the Slee corner marker turn signal mod.
I need a new antenna.
Getting rid of all the chrome on the grill. Painting it 6M1, flat black or to match the wheels... idk.

I'm pretty sure this is close to accurate;

Green 6M1 = 12
Desert Tan = 11.5
Blue / White = 10.5
Pink = 5
John Deere Blitz Black = 3
Olive Drab = 2.5
Ebag's make over = 2
Murdered out = 2
Black = 2
BB Camo = 1
Nightshadow Pearl = 1
Metallic Grey = 1
Orange = 1
Toyota Freeborn Red = 1
Seafoam Green = 1
Prius baby puke green = 1
OD Green / Tan = 1
Short bus Yellow = 1
Ivan Stewart = 1
Marine Blue = 1
Galactic Grey = 1
FJ Radiant Red/ white top = 1

Emerald Green 6M1 wins.
I'm going to do a low liner application, bumpers, flares and low across body like wob's rig in this picture.

I'm using the door edge trim for the flare gaskets, thanks to 98 snake eater for that idea.
White roof.
Not sure about wheel color yet.

I'm looking locally for a good gun and compressor to use. If I can't find one to use (borrow) I'll have to buy some gear I can afford (cheap).

Tear down and prep starts tomorrow.

Thanks again for all your tips, jokes, comments and ideas.
I wish I had the $ to do the Ivan Stewart... :meh:

Parts are flyin off, about to fire up the sander.

Also, if you hate rust, remove your factory roof rack. Mine wasn't as bad as others I've seen.

I'm thinking about trimming the mud flaps along the red line in the photo which would turn them into mud 'nubs. The flares, flaps and bumpers are going to get lined black.
Any opinions about trimming the flaps? I'm not sure if I'll like the look or not although, either way, they'll be covered with liner.

I trimmed the flaps before I removed my flares. I liked how it looked. Still got hung up and popped a flare off though .

Backing against rocks can cause the flap to get sandwiched with the tire applying pressure downward. That causes the flap and flare to pull away. I think that is probably one of the most common ways that flares get damaged.

I trimmed my flaps by 2" and never had that problem again. Trimming at the red line should work dealing with that problem, but I am sure that it is possible to cause damage in other ways...
