New paint color chosen by the 80 Series Tech crowd.

***UPDATED to save you some time. The paint color has been decided.
White top, I like the contour lines Summit Cruisers used.
6M1, Dark Emerald single stage.
Black bed liner on flares, rockers, bumpers.
Wheels, rear air deflector and all front end chrome will all be flat black.
FJ40 emblems.
Removal of roof rack and air deflector.

Some awesome ideas popped up in this thread.
Thanks to all who contributed, especially Summit Cruisers for all the great tech tips.***

I posted this over in Paint and Body but all I hear are crickets in that forum so I'm posting up in Tech.

PICK MY PAINT COLOR! THE COLOR WITH THE MOST VOTES WHEN I AM READY TO PAINT WINS!!
I can't decide between staying original with the 6M1 Green or white, or black, or etc... so you get to pick.

I'm about to start prepping my 80 for paint and I want to pound out a couple dents the best I can.
What's the best way to prep the car?
What tools should I reach for?

The last car I painted was a 67 VW bug when I was a teenager. Wet sand and spray cans.
My rig is 6M1 Dark Emerald Pearl and it's in horrible shape. There's no way I can make it worse so no reason not to paint it myself!

The running boards and brush guard have been removed and it already looks better. I'm resurfacing the wheels as well. I'm not sure if I'm going to paint them or leave them bare aluminum. Maybe black or graphite..

WHAT THE HELL, PICK MY WHEEL COLOR TOO!!!!

It's getting a new windshield after painting is done.
The rear dent I think I can pop out alright but the door is going to be some work.
I have been overwhelmed by the paint info on the web I've been reading and really hope to find a simple way to do it.
Any tips are appreciated.

  :hhmm:

Hopefully, since I want the dudes in Tech to pick the colors this thread can stay in Tech?!

****Here's one after shot. I'll add more soon.****

Nightshadow Pearl, aka dark blue, code 8K0. Paint the wheels gunmetal gray and ditch the center cap.

Satin black with gloss graphite wheels.

I vote 6m1. Best color out there and you won't have to worry about door jambs/ engine bay.

Tips: I removed everything except the rear hatch and front fenders. Use thick weedeater cord tucked under all the window gaskets. I even used tennis racket string around the inside of the windows (black trim). Don't skimp on tape. The cheap tape bleeds and does not hold the lines well. Buy some aerosol adhesion promotor, it will help in those hard to sand areas (door jams, window trim etc). Sand everything before paint with 400 and use some fine scotch-brite for the tough to sand areas. Don't forget to wet your shop floor down. After paint/clearcoat I wet sand with 1200, then 1500 and lastly 2000. Buff out with 3 grades of compound liquid. Can't remember which ones I use. Hope that helps. For my latest write up here's the thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/522319-black-tan-dune-beige-painting-completed.html Color? Maybe a dark metallic grey. Wheel color same or similar to mine.

My niece was glad to see a vote for pink.
Blue and white like this? 5 minute photoshop job. Ha ha... it looks awesome.. hope I can paint better than I can photoshop...

Hmm.. I screwed it up.. too much rum. Too much white on the back end, it's supposed to have blue to the roof.. oh well, I'm not wasting another 5 minutes fixing it.

I just went down this exact same route with my green 94. We all have different circumstances, I will give you a bit of mine.

Never painted before, body was in pretty good shape with a couple small dents I could fix. I wanted to go white and bought all the supplies (Nasons full base and Clear). I planned to do jams etc. Once I started researching more I realized I don't have the skills/time or space to pull all the doors or to paint with them on.

Decided to stay green, don't love the color, but don't hate it either. My LC spent almost 3 months sitting in the garage with me working on it 3-6 hours a week.

I finally thought I was to the point of wet sanding and buffing. Started working on one fender and it was looking ok. Decided to pull it out into the sun and was not happy. The entire car looked like a leopard!

The wife and I had a good laugh, but also realized we didn't want to drive it around like that. Took it to a fairly local shop, got a mid level white job with all the jams, hood, and rear hatch painted in and out.

Wish I had done that from the beginning. I ended up spending about 4x what I wanted, but I have a lot of experience!

The good part about getting the shop to paint the job and it turning out fairly well is I already had the car stripped down. If you do some reading you will see that this is the area the shops will skimp. Basically they just resanded and sprayed, I had done the body work and stripped everything.

My biggest mistake? I thought I could get by with the 2 florescent lights in my garage. Uh, nope. What looked like complete full coverage in the garage was no where near that in the sun. Do not skimp on the lighting! The problem with the green is it's metalic and it will magnify any mistake that you make.

Other than the cost, i'm happy I ended up with the white cruiser I wanted from the beginning. Good luck, keep us posted.

I can probably give you more advice on what not to do so don't be afraid to ask. If you want to know what to do, Summit Cruisers did an awesome job on his (probably taking credit for his sons work!).

Can't help you on color, I think lighter colors with dark wheels look better but we all have our own opinion on that one.

Body
Green = 2
Blue / White = 2
Orange = 1
Desert Tan = .5
Olive Drab = .5

Wheels
Gunmetal Gray = 1
Graphite = 1
Rusto Dark Gray = 1

Looks like the wheels will end up gray.

Keep the votes (and paint tips) coming!

green!!! do it !

just make it two tone what ever colors you choose.

a white cap makes the 80 look nice.

how about a 55 series paint scheme?

I'd stay with the stock color, that way the door jambs and engine bay will still match and it won't look cheesy.

FZJ80 Land Cruiser wheels are, in my opinion, some of the coolest wheels I've seen. They are forged, super stong, and relatively light weight. Wouldn't ditch them for anything else. Not a big fan of the blacked out looked... If it were me, I'd just refinish and re-clearcoat them.

Not very original I know, but certain things are better left untouched.

Let us know how it goes painting it yourself, please! I'm kicking around the idea of painting my beater car myself.

Rebadge to Lexus and paint it pink digital camo with a white cap.
