So I just purchased a '74 FJ40. Will actually be in the driveway Sunday. I'm giddy!

The guy says that it hasn't been cranked in 6 months but it ran fine before that. What should I do first? I'm assuming it would not be a good idea to jump it off and hit the road (assuming it'll start).

Thanks! Looking forward to lots of reading...

Congrats! We all know the giddy feeling.

Check and recheck brakes and clutch master/slave. Of coarse, well you have to go through the whole thing! Get a manual. Buy a star here on mud so you can post some good pics, only $20 & well worth supporting this site.

I always change fluids on the vehicles I purchase. It gives you a starting point on a maintenance schedule and you really never know for sure if the PO did change the oil or not.....

check fluids and turn the key. When I bought mine it had sat for 2 to 4 years, I hooked up a new battery and it started instantly, can't beat a 40!

fluids, check the plugs/wires, check for a good battery, give breaks a really good check and let'er roll!

I'll give it a good once-over and see if it'll start just for s***s and giggles. I'm still towing it home though...about 250mi....SC from bottom to top back home.

What they said, and Welcome:cheers:

Welcome!

Busted a 74 off that sat for YEARS.Marval Mystery oil down each plug hole (a few drops)Changed the oil. Checked the brakes.Busted right off.Runs like a champ.Start it with the radio/stereo and heater Off.Listen to it growl and fall in love with your new mistress.Oh yeah...I turned mine a few turns with a socket on the pulley but that was after sitting for years. You can just have fun.

That's all the wife would let me spend since I bought a hundy back in August. Seriously...She said, "If you can find one for $1000, you can buy it. Until then, STOP SHOPPING!!!" So, I found one for 1k. She can't argue.

Congrats!...Besides all the important stuff already mentioned, I went out and bought a fire extinguisher for the vehicle (can't be too safe) and a drip pan for the garage. The drip pan came in handy (not only to keep the floor clean) but to identify the slow leaks I have in mine.

Enjoy!

Thanks for that one! I totally forgot about that possibility.

Well, we didn't get it running but I got it home!

I'm assuming this stuff is part of the '74 Special Edition Package. It's great to see it all still in tact. Expecially the Spalding shades!
