I think you got a deal! There is always gonna be something to do, but enjoy each step. A non-running Toyota is better than a running j**p any day! Just Kidding!
Glad you got it and are learning already. Carbs scare me too, but I think reading and trying to learn is the biggest thing. FSM can work wonders if you can follow directions.

No you're not...don't lie. You don't have to play the JK card here at MUD.
I drained the gas the best I could without removing the tank and put about 5 gal. of fresh in. It's only poison if you drink more than a cup right? I had to order the wires--they'll be here Sat. morning at 7:30. I'll be there waiting.
I dont know a ton of mechanical stuff but I do know that you need 3 things to make any engine run. Spark, gas and air. So those are the 3 things you have to check.
- spark to pugs, if not start from the batt and work out or start at the plug and work back to the batt.
- gas, carb getting fuel? Un hook fuel pump to carb line if not and see if the fuel pump is pumping fuel when you are turnign it over. (fuel filter too.)
- air - lastly, if you are getting the 2 other items and still nothing then it could be a carb tuning (air) issue.
Again, I dont know alot, but check the simple things first.
Good luck if nothing else post up more pics that keeps us happy.
After cleaning the points, leave the ignition switch on, and at a place where the points are closed, take a screwdriver and open then by twisting it between the cam and the arm of the points. They should arc and you will hear an audible pop. (dont be touching the coil wire at this time). If still no spark, disconnect the small wire to the base of the distributer and run a jumper wire to the battery. Im not sure if there is a resistor in the circuit but you should be ok for a while that way. Now test again. This eliminates the ignition switch or any wires etc. that could be a problem. Now my favorite fuel system for the initial startup is a gas tank and hose from an outboard motor. The tank will be clean, fuel fresh and the pump ball will insure the carb bowl is full. Best to hook it up before the fuel pump, which should take over. If it doesn't, just keep squeezing the ball and it runs fine. I like the fire extinguisher tip and the marvel in the cylinders. I also add some to the tank of gas. Poor engine has been so dry for so long, and we know that can't be good.
1. Here's a pic of the distributor. This looks much cleaner than the thread you referenced in the pm Troll. And, I am getting a spark between the points when the key is turned. But, they may not be opening enough...
2. What is this hose connected to the dist.? Where is it supposed to be connected on the other end? I just noticed it last night--that it wasn't connected to anything.
Did you clean the points well? That hose should be connected to the base of the carb. Take a plug out and leave it connected to the plug wire. Make sure the body of the spak plug is grounded somewhere and crank the motor. If you have spark. Go out and buy a can of starting fluid. Try starting it. If it starts then you have a fuel, Timing or compression issue.
Ahh hell. Just call me and I'll come over and get it started for you or find your problem. I have never had a f or 2f I couldn't get running yet.
