Nice find, welcome:beer:

Wait 'til I show you pics of the floor under the driver's seat...

Pretty freakin' cool...I've got a 74' Freeborn Red as well....hit me up if you need any 'year specific' pics or anything.

Thanks Ziff. Do you have a build thread somewhere?

First order of business is getting it running. I'm itchin' to drive it before I take her apart. Problem is, I'm a newbie mechanic too. I've never messed with carbs and I think that may be my problem right now. New battery, spark plugs...It wants to crank. It just won't. Any suggestions?

Did you try running it on starting fluid? I went to look at a FJ40 that sat for 5 years and I got it to run on starting fluid with a battery. The gas tank was no longer connected.

Nice truck, you got a very good deal. Check to see if it's getting fuel, maybe the filter is shot, or the fuel pump is out, or the flexible fuel line has holes, which would result in "no gas" at the carb. It's probably something simple. Watch, and don't crank it for too long, or you'll fry the starter. Mine had a crushed fuel line from where the PO tried jumping. Once you get it going, drain all the fluids, including the diffs and tranny and transfer, and replace all. Call it "baselining". Welcome:beer:Ned

I still haven't gotten it started. All the spark plugs are new but I'm not getting fire. Nor am I getting fuel to the carb. I'm going to replace the wires tonight. They're litterally falling apart. Should I go ahead and replace the dist. and rotor too? Battery is on the charger now and I found some tires that will hold air so when it does crank I can take it for a spin.

Jerry Jeff wants to sing but he's got a case of stage fright!

Wish me luck...

I doubt it ran 6 months ago then if your having that many problems. Did you check the main wire going from the coil to the distribator for spark.

No spark at the coil. The wires are done. Replace tonight and go from there.

I would put on a new:

Cap
Rotor
Wires
fuel filter
plugs
(all this would be cheap insurance anyhow)

Get your battery up to charge, or swap a known working one for fun.
spray a touch of starter fluid or a bit of gas in carb
Have a timing light ready to roll.

Double check your oil level, and pressure once it fires.

Have fun keep us posted.

I would put on a new:

Cap ordered today
Rotor ordered today
Wires ordered today
fuel filter less than 1 year old (saw recipt) change anyway?
plugs ordered today (store only had four)
(all this would be cheap insurance anyhow)

Get your battery up to charge (working on it--probably get new just because), or swap a known working one for fun.
spray a touch of starter fluid or a bit of gas in carb
Have a timing light ready to roll. don't have one yet

Double check your oil level, and pressure once it fires.

Have fun keep us posted. will do!

Besides getting it running, I want to change/repair the driver's side floor pan. It scares me.

Unfortunately, I don't have a build thread yet, as she's in pretty great shape, but I did do a head and carb rebuild and she runs like I never thought she could!

My personal advice would be to do the stuff that needs to be done to the engine before getting too excited about running it. Randomly replacing little things is going to add up quickly...might as well just do the stuff that she probably needs. A carb rebuild kit is cheap and isn't that difficult to do..just take pictures so you can put it back together properly. I was surprised how well my truck ran with a lot of stuff in bad shape. With the rebuilt head and carb, it runs like a different machine...feels like 40 more horsepower! So, basically, I'd say, do what it takes and do it right the first time instsead of 'patching it' just to run it. And, as far as being a newbie mechanic, just read a TON of posts, and the service manuals....that's all I did and the head removal and carb rebuild went great! Hope that helps a little....let me know if you have any specific questions or feel free to email or PM me.
