Donno if anyone here can help me out on this, but I thought Id try...
I need a R and L hand thread 23mmx 1.5 mm TAP.
What happened was when I welded in the thread insert for my tie rod and drag links, the threads BELOW the weld seems to have SHRUNK as its a BITCH trying to thread the TRE's in.

Anyone have these that I can BORROW!?!?!?!
There is NOTHING locally to purchase, and none of the machine shops have the L thread.

I could ship the links, but I REALLLLY dont wanna do that if I dont have to. It just needs a thread chase.

Please let me know!

Thanks,

keith

Can't help on the tap, but if you have to weld more inserts screw in a bolt or sacraficial heim next time before welding. Keeps the threads from getting screwed up.

Yeah....
That seems like it would have been a great idea.
Ya keep learning new tricks all the time in this hobby. I thought I had learned the lesson of the power of heat, but apparently NOT.:bang:

Thanks for the tip.
I was out with a bunch of cruiser heads last noc. and someone said to try picking up a bolt and threading THAT in as a chase...problem will be finding that LH thread bolt as well.

If anyone knows of any place that MIGHT carry that....?

fastenal, there is a store in Reno and one in Sparks.
Fastenal

The old school way to chase threads is to get the right-size bolt, and cut several vertical (axial) slots in it. Then run it in

Great find.. I took a look at my usual spot McMaster Carr and they skip the 23mm size

Have you tried heating them back up, then screwing in the TREs and letting it cool? It might work...

Nope.
Im just gonna send it in to Low range off road where I got the inserts from. They said they would tap em for me for the cost of shipping to and from.
That is gonna be the least expensive route at this point.
I DID try to thread them in using a little PERSUASION...took forever, and it really didnt loosen up to the point they were free moving.

hey keith, you can make a thread chaser out of a bolt, just cut grooves in the bolt , you dont need a tap being you already have threads cut

X3 What they said.

I think I'm gonna give this a try this weekend. Got the tre's for 20 bucks from marlin.... Can't do much worse.

yup. The tap is gonna be pretty spendy if you can find one.

They are.
That L hand tap is about 100 bucks just for the tap. Id be into it about 150 if I got both including shipping.
two TRE's are 40. If I shipped them in to be tapped, I figure it will be about 40 bucks for the ride to and from and probably AT LEAST a week in time.
Ill give it a go this weekend.

Just out of curiosity, it probably wouldnt be a good idea to actually RUN the TRE's when finished, right?
I could probably use them as spares though?

If you only make a couple of cuts they'd be fine for spares. I'm not so sure that method is going to do you much good as it is usually used for cleaning threads and not cutting threads. With the warped bung, I think there will be a little cutting needed.
If it doesn't work, you're welcome to send them to us (Marlin Crawler) and we'll run the taps through as well.

Brendan..
Thanks for the offer.
Ill give it a go at this point and see what I can do with the "self cut" method, but Ill definitely hit you guyz up if I need em reamed again.
that would be better than shipping up to oregon where the inserts came from.
Glad you posted up about this. I wasnt sure that you guyz would do that.

BTW, you are (secretly) one of my cruiser heros for the work you did on the 60.
Kept trying to catch you at SnT a couple years ago, but you were out and about everytime I came by your camp. GREAT JOB on that build. I was really impressed.

Ill PM you if I fail, to see what I need to do about shipping these things.

Thanks,

Keith
