Previous owner tried to tie in a trailer plug to the rear tail lights. Started hacking wires and I don't have the wiring colors the schematics have in Haynes. I have green, green white stripe (hot), and red with light purple stripe and a green with yellow stripe in the mix. Weird stuff like step on the brake and left signal comes on. If I could see pics of driver and passenger it would help.
Thanks

When you say the left signal comes on with the brake are talking about the front or rear turn signal? Sounds like a wiring issue at the brake light switch if the front.

Nah, it's the driver rear. I'll straighten the wiring out tomorrow with the schematic info Byron provided and go from there.

Unhooked all the wires on the rear brake lights. When I step on the brake the flasher clicking starts. When I put the flasher lever in the left turn signal position it stops. Just when I push on the brakes. So flasher or brake relay? Wiring looks intact.

I have a 70 also. I finally got so tired of messing with the light wiring I had to take it in to a shop.
Come to find out there was a bad ground that I did not see and the flasher had a short in it.
Lots of previous owner bad fixes to deal with. I hope yours works out.

Unhooked all wires except the two green with white stripe to the lights. The brake lights work and when the turn signal is in the left position no flashing of the brake lights. If I move the turn signal switch to the middle or right position both brake lights flash. Also notice my headlights aren't working or my dash lights.

The general ground of the battery or to the flasher?

grounds anywhere within the same circuit - the blinkers/brake lights/hazard are in the same circuit

get a wiring diagram for your year truck and look it up - start here: click this ---> Coolerman's Electrical Schematics and FSM File Retrieval - his website has a lot of other good information as well: !Oy: Coolermans 1971 FJ40 Build

this site has more Factory Service Manuals: For Sale: - 40, 50, 60, and 80 series FSM for a hell of a price.

I have a similar situation. The running lights and brake lights work fine but when the flasher is applied, the light on the side the flasher is applied goes completely out. I changed the flasher module and now the lights wont go out but there is no flasher signal. I too have a mess with the previous owner installing a trailer hitch and the wiring is a mess. I know all you need is the green wire and the green striped wire but is there a fuse link other than the fuse box. I'm stumped.

There is a inline glass fuse in the harness between the emergency light switch and the fuse box on my 71. Very difficult to see and get to. I found about 6 different problems on my 71 till I got it sorted out. You don't have any LED lights do you?

no, pure stock
Have you taken the emergency flasher switch apart and cleaned it yet?? That switch controls the signal paths of the brake, turn signal, and e flashers. It's all copper contacts and they get crusty. I pull them apart and clean them with a scotch bright pad and apply dielectric grease. You do have to open up the switch and try not loose any parts. It's fairly easy though

I removed about 4 of someone's attempt at trailer lights and got it down to just the wires coming straight out of the frame. That is all you should have in the rear to start. FSM tells you which wire to which side. Start there and make sure the wiring is correct then trace any faults. I was amazed at how fast mine came together after that.

The brake lights and running lights work, just not the flasher. When the flasher was applied, the light completely went out. I changed the module and now the light stays on but no blinking either front or rear. I did notice the lights on the dash work now, at least one of them but I'm stumped. I'm about ready to take the advise and just cut the wires from the frame and start over. just like his, there was a vein attempt at a trailer switch that looks like spaghetti.
