My Video: Changing the Engine Oil in my 200 Series

I did the same thing yesterday as well! Video was much appreciated.

@AL LC2013 , you can cut a pieice of tubing to fit over the end of the snap tool. That way, once the snap tool snaps in place, the oil drains through the tube, instead of all over your hands. A garden hose would probably be the correct diameter.
A bottle works well...along the lines of a wine bottle (the ones with corks). Simply hold onto the bottle with the tool in place, and jam it into the bottom of the oil canister. Virtually zero mess.

Thanks for the write-up, it helped immensely!

First change on my new-to-me 200 ('10 with 60k miles).

Of course, bolts were missing from the skid plate and the oil-drain cap on the oil filter housing was WAY over tightened so I had to take the entire filter housing off without being able to drain the oil first. What a mess.

One possible edit to your video- to reset my maintenance reminder, you said to hold the trip button down, with your foot on the brake while starting the vehicle. That did not work for me. What did work was to hold the button down and push start with my foot off the brake (only turned car on, did not start it). Perhaps this is a year model specific detail.

Anyway, thanks for the tutorial. Also, I have a Fumoto ordered for my next change. That will keep down on the mess!

Do you know if the GF-6A can be used in the newer LC200's 13+ engines?

I have a question on the ILSAC GF-5 oil specification vs the new ILSAC GF-6A "new" oil

It seems many places now are replacing the GF-6A with the GF-5 on the shelves.

Both are 0W-20, but the GF-5 is getting harder to find.

AND the barcode is exactly the same on the 5 quart jugs !

the GL-5 and GL-6A have the exact same bar codes.

In addition to that there is a new 0W-16 oil out for Toyota engines, and thoughts on that?

The best I can determine, there will be two grades of ILSAC GF-6: GF-6A and GF6B. GF-6A will be fully backward compatible and will be available in 0W-20 oils. GF-6B will not be backward compatible and will only apply to 0W-16 oils which are not suitable for the LC200/LX570.

Here's the best summary I found FYI:

ILSAC GF-6A and GF-6B
ILSAC GF-6 will be split into two subcategories: GF-6A and GF-6B. The principal difference between the two subcategories of oils concerns viscosity grade and high temperature, high shear (HTHS) performance.

The proposed ILSAC GF-6A specification would replace the current ILSAC GF-5 specification, represented by the starburst/certification trademark, and would provide a new performance level of an engine oil for spark-ignited internal combustion engines.

The proposed ILSAC GF-6B will provide the same performance as GF-6A, but with the added aim of lower HTHS to deliver potential further fuel economy benefits. ILSAC GF-6B will be defined for 0W-16 viscosity grade oils only.

GF-6A - The attributes of GF-6A include the following:

  • Backwards compatible with older engines
  • Better durability to mitigate LSPI
  • Good fuel economy, as measured by Sequence VIE
  • Covers SAE 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30 viscosity grades
  • For XW-20, min HTHS = 2.6; for XW-30, min HTHS = 2.9
GF-6B - The attributes of GF-6B include the following:

  • Not backwards compatible with older engines
  • Better durability to mitigate LSPI
  • Better fuel economy, as measured by Sequence VIF
  • Covers only SAE 0W-16 viscosity grade with min HTHS = 2.3
