My Saginaw Power Steering Swap

I run a scout box and a gm pump. In the past I ran sag steering with the box out front. I've always used a jeep cj7 h/p line. The cj7 line has a long relatively straight section of metal line that ran along the frame to the steering box, which was similar to what i needed for the sag box out frt. I made a couple of bends to make it work. I use the same line for my scout box, but drastically alter it. I have a quality tubing bender to bend the long metal section for my needs then cut and double flare the fitting at the box.

So I bought that part today only to find out that the fitting on the box side is bigger in diameter. On the pump side of it it’s fine. Back to the drawing board.
What box do you have?

My Saginaw box is mounted out front, I REALLY like the way your steering gear box is mounted in the engine compartment. Had I more youthful motivation and energy, I would do something along this line. On the other hand, @Jdc1 absolutely PERFECTED my power steering setup…I mean really perfect

Al- you are going to make me blush.

I do not adjust my steering wheel every 50 feet to stay on track…. It steers like my Silverado high country pickup…you really got it exact!!

Thanks. I couldn't bear to hack the new oem fender to clear the box. I decided on some strategic slices.

Interesting.
That is a J20 box - supposedly. That is what I have run with that jeep hose I listed. May be a dumb question - are you sure you are sticking the hose in the pressure and not the return?

Yeah because on the pump side the fitting screws in. Also the longer part of the hardline connects to the box.
Was just thinking out loud. Just from memory the return fitting and pressure fitting on the box are different sizes right?

I just looked that # up on r/a cardone 27-6529. That box takes a seal type h/p hose. Its not an inverted flare box. I think later model cj's went to seal type boxes, but i dont know when.

Edit: 27-6529 is for a 1976 Jeep J20
and appears to have an inverted flare and accepts a flared hose.

So an oring at the box and a flare at the pump for @cims1970fj40
There have often been some malfųckery in the boxes over the years and it is sometimes a crapshoot what you get in a reman. Once I ended up with the right box but with only 3 mounting ears. I did not want that as 4 is better than 3.

Idk, it seams you has a bunch of mismatched parts. Looking at r/a later cj7 went to O rings on both ends. 1 end is 16mm and the other is 18mm. If you want to use a cj7 style hose. You need to confirm the h/p threads are on the box. I think you might be able to change the fitting on the back of the pump to the proper seal type. You'll need to note what the box's threads are too.

Edit: 3

A custom hose would most likely be cheaper, or look in to swapping out the fitting on the back of the pump to a o ring type. It would be nice to buy a hose off the shelf for future replacements.

Or if you have one made that works, get whom ever does it to make a backup. I have had brake lines made here in Rome for my 40 and it was super cheap. But they have to have the right fittings on hand obviously. (I feel like I got lucky as Sisson Hydraulics up here used to have the Toyota brake compatible fittings on hand.) I expect you would need to bring both the pump and box with you. Maybe put a hard 90° at the pump end and then use pressure hose curving the entire way to the pump?
