My rescue and recesitation of a 71 spring green 40.

Plan is to get it running. Get most everything functional and keep it as original as possible.

As soon as I get it home it’s cleaning and inventorying EVERYTHING. I need to see what I have.

First big decision is whether or not to keep the F and rebuild it or find a a good 2F drivetrain to drop in. The purist in me is screaming to leave the F and 3 on the tree.

Even if you decided to go 2F, I’m with you on keeping column shift. Did you pick up on the post about @65swb45, aka Mark’s Offroad figuring out how to do a 4 on the tree? Once cleaned up I think this rig is going to be stunning.

Mark of Mark's Off Road did a conversion of '3 on the Tree' to '4 on the Tree'. I'd go that route to keep the stock look while upgrading to a 4 speed.

The F motor isn't a bad motor if it is workable it has comparable to a 2F in Power but can get slightly better fuel economy.

A 2F would look at home in there and only a few would know it wasn't original... especially with the F valve cover, intake, etc.

Unless the F will easily run, I'd throw in a 2F runner and deal with the F later.

You're starting with more (body wise) than I've got now after 26 years of upgrades.

Agreed. If the F is healthy then run it. If not, swap in a 2F and don’t think twice about it.

The F has been completely broken down. It’s all there. The P.O. broke it down years ago to put some rings in it and never got around to it. So it’s been apart for years. My thoughts are that if I was going to use the original F then I would rebuild it anyway. That’s my dilemma. Put the money into rebuilding the F or use that money to find a solid 2F drive train.

Heads up, F pistons are NLA.

That's why most Fs die before there time.

NLA?

No longer available

Gotcha. I am trailering it home in a couple of hours so I will be able to inventory everything. The blocked looked good but I will need to take a look at the pistons.

Oh, and I thought I read on JT outfitters they had a rebuild kit with pistons? I was just glancing through so I may be wrong on that.

Mark and all

Part of the fallout from the warehouse fire and reorganization was taking a hard look at all the ‘irons’ and setting a slightly modified course that I could sustain.

I let the prototype go, I believe to @ClemsonCruiser .

As far as a motor, if you want an F, buy someone else’s.

If you want a 2F...buy someone else’s. The chorus of those with disappointing rebuilds gets louder every year. Jim C. is still a trusted source, but with so many looking to him, no idea what his backlog is like.

Well, I drug her home this evening. She hasn’t moved in probably 26 years, best I can figure. I will get her running again and back on the road.

Pics are of previous home, loaded and new home.

Thank you. I’m curious, the interior appears to be the spring green color. It’s the only thing that really looks close. From what I have read, that color was only used in 70. Can anyone confirm this?

I have had a ‘69 and a 71 that were also that color.

I’d be hella curious to se what some of that naval jelly treatment @thebigredrocker recommends would do for those panels.

They are only original color once.
