An update- This weekend we finished the front axle and knuckle rebuild etc. The two front tires are on and it looks awesome! My camera battery died so I will have to take some pics later in the week. New warn hubs also went on. Today after school I will be seperating the cowl from the old tub, and then (if I get it off fast enough), im bringing it to my painter so he can prep and paint the firewall. This will allow us to finally mount up the front cowl with the frame, making it possible to- mount up the new tub, finish the engine, route new brake lines, put in all of the applicable firewall stuff.

A QUESTION- Today I need to order my paint....I am going to go with the origional freeborn red. Here is a link to CCOT's color code page....http://coolfj40.stores.yahoo.net/colorcodes.html....they go on about how if you want the origional finish then you should use a singe stage acrylic enamel....etc etc its in the paragraph at the top. It says that this will yield a less shiney finish. In the picture example the truck has a high gloss finish. I was wondering if this is what your trucks turned out like by folowing their paint instructions, or if this picture is of a different type of paint. I want mine to come out like in their picture.

Looks good so far man, I can't wait to see it come alive.

The fenders look as though they have a lot of filler still in them, its the pink stuff. I would make sure to take a look at the metal underneath, as I don't think there is any reason to go this far and not get ALL the rust out of the rig.

Looks great man, should be sweet when done.

A litte update...

Still feeling too lazy to take pictures... I seperated the tub and the cowl, it went seamlessly...man I sure do love my makita grinder. Tonight we took all of the body parts (doors, hood, fenders, etc) to the painter...He felt that he could get all preped to the point where no spot welds or body work would be noticeable. At this point he is only painting the firewall, and inside the dash, also jambing it. I decided to go with the single stage acrylic enamel in T309....Freeborn red. This is the origional factory type paint, with no clear coat...I chose this to boost value, and because the picture in the CCOT page of the red 40 is bitchin. So they mixed it up for me today and I went and picked it up this afternoon.....

Also got some gator liner...aka bed liner

Im planning on coating the inside of the tub up to the firewall, and also the underneath, hopefully this will help soundproof it.

More info and some pics to come with this weekend...maybe tmrow if I get my act together.

As for your question about the high-gloss appearance of the paint on CCOT's site, just realize that many commercial photographers will use wet-look polishes and waxes to get the vehicle to shine. As long as your painter gets several good coats of paint laid down, you will be able to bring it up to a showroom shine yourself.

A quick question in regards to running new brake lines...Looking at schematics...It seems that there are alot of connectors, and specific spiral twists etc to get the brake lines run right.

What do you guys think...would it be better (when on a big time crunch) to take it to a local shop and have them run all of the brakes...that way it saves me time...(wont have to get online and guess as to what parts ill need)...plus if it doesnt work right they would have to fix it for free....

just do it myself

(I have never run bake lines before...but my buddy has and he said he can show me how, but doesnt have the time to do it with me)

Given this what do you guys think...

Its real easy to do if you have the all the parts. Unions and lines. A cheap line bending kit with flare tool and line cutter will make a quick job of it. I picked one up from Harbor Freight fo $20. Personally my opinion is no shop can do as good of job than doing it yourself. You know there were no short cuts taken. If you had a local shop that specialized in cruisers that make be a different case, but may cost some coin.

Not to much has happened lately....Alot of planning and prep work...Trying to figure out how to get this done in time for college.

At this point, the cowl is at the painters, and will be finished tmrow (tues). So tmrow after school I'm going to go pick it up and mount it up. I should be getting my guages and guage panel tmrow too, so possibly start mounting that stuff up also.

As for the axles, one of my friends made a really stupid mistake....when we were putting together the front axle, he fogot to put in one of the axle shafts...got as far as finishing up the day and having both tires on, he left, and then later that day when I went to put on the new warn hubs, I noticed on one side he had put it all together minus the shaft. lol. So we went back and fixed that and tonight I got both of the hubs on.

The plan for the week is this: Once the front cowl is up, it will allow me to mount the brake booster/whole brake setup to the cowl, therefor allowing me to run all of the brake lines. Once that is completed, its time for the wiring. Hopefully I can get the brakes finished and atleast a big dent put in the wiring process by the end of this upcoming weekend. Also, tmrow (tuesday), the rear axle bearings will have shipped into my local NAPA store, so I can get the rear wheels on.

As for the lack of updates and pictures....I only have 2 more weeks of Highschool, so I'm swamped from homework and stuff. After that all of my time will go towards finishing the cruiser.

After finshing the wiring, we should be able to put in the fuel tank, mount up the aqualu tub, and put on the finishing touches.

On the way back from the painter.....Man did I want to kill him... Partially my fault for telling him to get it done on a tight schedual....but it was to cold to paint so there are a few runs. I guess when we go to paint the whole thing all at once he is going to go over it all again and fix the bad spots.

Update

Napa, as usual, failed to get my rear bearings in time. I recieved them last week, but with finals in school, I didnt actually get to them until yesterday. The rear axle is now sealed, and the rear brakes were also put on yesterday. I couldnt finish the brakes and put the tires on though, because I was missing the brake retaining clips and pins. I ordered them though and they should be here tonight...$12.50, not bad compared to SOR's $89.00 for the whole kit. Today my cone washers, and bolts came in so I can finish the front and put on the other tire. I am still in the process of hunting down a porportioning valve and all of the necissary fittings, and once that is done the brake lines will be run. In the mean time, this weekend I plan to start the wiring....oh and shooting my painter. At this rate its going to be the prep/painting that prohibits this project from being done in time to go to college with me.

P.S. If anyone lives near Durango Colorado, I could really use some extra help. Good local beer and food in exchange.
 
Good to hear your still plugging along! I'd love to come down and help but I'd be more of a hindrance than a help I'm afraid :frown: I'm pretty much only a 1 :banana: capable person at this point in time. Keep a good attitude and try not to cut too many corners in your hurry to get her done ;)
 
Things looking good. All the hard work will pay off with a sweet rig. Mine was 5 years.
