Back to the heater tubes etc.

Spent a lot of time with them. The ends were not perfectly round, so Rus put in a tapered socked and lightly shaped the ends back into a circle....
IMG_0586.jpg

Also a lot of back and forth bending the tube back to the shape it should be - it was mangled when I got this Rig, and the hose ends would like up the best. So heating it up and gently shaping it, test fit. Rinse and Repeat.

Found holes too in one of the two tubes and started to patch - braised them. Blurry but can see what up against... EDIT: Can see a crack to the right of the pin hole.
IMG_0607.jpg

Setup for both shaping and braising... EDIT: See the T going to the right on the left side of vice? The PO did who knows what and really screwed up that intersection - and the whole tube was compromised to a degree. My solution as to just have a bit longer hose and clamp it all down and GTG (good to go). Nope, there could be a better way than cover up with longer hoses.
IMG_0601.jpg

Sample of test fitting.. The tubes that go down - making sure they align, then on the other side of the firewall with the heater valve, then lastly, does it align going in to the box. Lots of back and forth and easy going. Not for the faint of heart. These are not the easiest to come by. If you do this, know what you're doing. It will become brittle from all the bends and game over... - caution done).

Yeller off the lift...
IMG_0600.jpg

Inside tube - got some of the straps on. Phone a friend - Ian was traveling and couln't take a picture of Normans bracket setup. No showstopper.

Shot of rear heater and trying to line up the tubes. I am missing the bracket that holds the tubes down at that gap. Think I have a lead on on.

Lots of back and forth on these too getting the to be right that makes the turns properly - forgot to get a final shot of it when done. but way better.
IMG_0613.jpg

I had powder coated a few of the hose brackets - some the grey color I used on yeller (pocket door, valve cover, etc)
IMG_0615.jpg

Coming together...
Can see the empty space for that missing bracket/clamp for tubes... Oh yeah the seat belt..
IMG_0621.jpg

So the seatbelts thingy (that is a technical term for a TEQ part). That bolt - they are strange. They are metic top and SAE thread to comply with DOT requirements.

Well - the bolt didn't have a metric head...
IMG_0618.jpg

So what do I do?

Survey Says....!
"Reinstall it, it will hold and no one with think about it, let alone see it."

What does Rus say.... nothing. He won't speak to me for 3-5 minutes.

blurry but Rus found a 14 mil head and the 5/8 (or whatever SAE thread) bolt the proper size - doesn't have the special marking that the TEQ bolts have for that particular bolt. Learned a few things, one big one is that Subaru and Toyota share bolts.

You seem to \be doing very well with these parts and pieces. I took the easy way out on all of the foam and ordered the one from the Netherlands and while not a cheap option, they are a near perfect fit. complete gasket set heater blower, air duct and heater Toyota landcruiser FJ40 | eBay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/285067698402?_skw=fj40+heater+gaskets&itmmeta=01JJGB8B4YD4FARQP63X6XNKRE&hash=item425f5be0e2:g:-v0AAOSwQX1m6UQ~&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKlttvwMdwh5O%2Bt5XJDBY3S0%2BshR2EYH1r2T0cnJ1yrpmKlS0ekKXmz4Vb%2FKvO5pKKf3hm34l7rB89uLaz7N4WZL3440ED1al78hdmTB1IQ%2B2czXo6eOC8QWoC6MFKpWXcC93KryuwwDhls8K2I%2FtIxHIAlz0jz9rPuN3%2BFQp6SGJ%2BIWZe4i5MzrllslR2w3IeaPZBvU%2BtSNIN0ARtb18a%2BkNiPxxxjje1LF%2Ffcz73pmQA3K%2FjWit6DizKBAx4fHnvj%2BuoSnD11OliW0cYRdG1CNt%2F3nrgk1Q7V36HEq1LHliQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR9qyoYuUZQ

I think you guys are shooting for concours style rebuilds and I think that is terrific.. I’m my case I am Doing the same kind of repairs where possible but if something to finish the job is NLA, I am fine with any other temporary option. Should one pop up in the future, I’ll change that… excellent job getting Yeller back in tip-top condition. 👏 👏. I love reading about your great progress

The engine bay got some new OEM hoses and OEM clamps...

This hose goes from the return heater to the radiator union. Also replaced the head to heater valve. The other hose didn't arrive. Rus had a spare cut to size - this would be least intrusive to replace later if desired.
IMG_0593.jpg

I had non OEM clamps - all the same came in a kit. Personally, not a fan at all, too soft of metal. So all inside clamps and hoses are OEM, a bunch of engine is now too -

Ended up pressurizing the system with air and squirted soapy water to see if it makes bubbles. Found a few leaks - Starts pressure at 7 psi and fixed. Then jumped to 15 as that is spec for the 2f radiator. Found a bigger leak - held pressure for a while.

Then.... Added coolant tonight...

Drove Yellr tonight and get to see what Rus was talking about. The rig is soooooo much quieter and better to drive. Cutting those military wraps - they were making Yellr howl. It is quiet enough to have a conversation - and yeah, I still have rattles - but compared to where it was, totally different experience.

I'm still down on Dobs for lack of customer service/support - but ok, the suspension is way better than before - I say that and Punch list for SAS #9 would be adding a leaf to rear springs due to the weight - the rear tire carrier has some major lbs too. I thought about heavy and remove, but went mediums.

Was a blast to drive again!!!!

What I didn't mention is the other day after Rus and I stopped on Yellr, we got his Rig out of storage. So freaking cool. We were making some lists to do. I call mine punch list. He is calling his a slap list. @solomrus thread should be cranking up in the near future.

Here is his thread...

Been driving Yellr almost daily for the last 5 days. Cutting the wraps was huge.

Drive home.

Some small items. My reverse light not working - turns out wire broke off at switch. I got one from City Racer as I had a small order assembled. Put that in, and the old one will be repaired and kept as a spare.

Wow - been over a month.

Been thinking about what I need done before SAS this year. Last year was a pant-load of work.

After cutting the military wraps, been a different ride. I got mediums springs on the rear. It was a toss-up due to the full 4-Plus tire and basket kit (that is some heavy metal) - while is just level with nothing in it - I ended up getting the "add a leaf" kit Dobinsons is now offering. I know I ranted about them, but given the new life it seems to have, spending another $60 isn't catastrophic contribution to them. It arrives Monday - that will be on my list.

Speaking of, my must do list is....
  • Add Leafs
  • Install SMG hood pins
  • Address oil leak around timing cover
  • Check/tune
    • Spark Plugs
    • Adjust Valves
    • Timing
    • Lean drop
  • Drive/offroad it and makes sure good-to go.
I have a long list of things I would like to do - not suitable to just list it all and will post what/if I do something on that list.

Edit: Crossing off items as they get done

Did they honor their warranty finally?
Yeah and the sun is rising in the West, and they finally re-read their exchange with you when it started and....

Scar tissue aside.... back at it - kind of. It was 80 today. No not the wind speed, the air temp. Went for a drive after work. (calling for blizzard conditions and power disruptions Wednesday)

And.... the back-up lights are on constantly!
IMG_1123.jpg

luckily the old switch was around - and after testing with the power probe etc, take out the switch installed a couple months ago (not OEM - but I could get reasonably quick).

Ended up heating the solder off the old unit to remove fragments off and attach the old wire
IMG_1125.jpg

and
IMG_1128.jpg

Didn't think about measuring the shaft until after installed - but the shaft seems a bit longer with the aftermarket - I know where your going Ian... but maybe that is why it stays on even when in neutral - just depressed enough to make it thing it is on. Worked fine when out, same with old, just when installed. who knows....
IMG_1130.jpg

Maybe when the Tcase is off and easy enough to get to, will remove & compare (if I have the aftermarket one around then)

Relaxing drive watching the sunset arriving home.

That is today venture.

Today ended up being an impromptu day with Yellr.

Went to Omaha to BS and help (aka watch) Rus remove some steps off an 80 making way for some rock sliders & eat muffins. Mainly to just BS. I did lift and carry the steps away after Rus removed the bolts.

We decided we wanted to do something else but not sure what exactly, so the choices dropped to make a decision to a) either Joel goes and get his motorcycle and parts and we dig in or b) Yellr get springs. - I was there with part & Yellr ... so convenience/laziness made the decision.

Up on the lift - put trans jack under axle and take off passenger side.

IMG_1177.jpg

shot of it disassembled and and about to go back together... (and can see the white pad on the end of new leaf I bla bla about below)
IMG_1178.jpg

The add a leaf comes with pads that keep the metal from rubbing. The original springs - not so much as far as padding for rubbing. Can see an example of the metal rub after taking apart.

IMG_1186.jpg

Here is a pad that comes with the kit that goes with the spring to keep it from rubbing the spring above. Grease just to hold it during assembly.
IMG_1185.jpg

Based on the grammar etc - would say these are not made in Australia.
IMG_1182.jpg

(Today heard about another person with the wraps rubbing the frame. My word to pass on is 'cut them' like Nolan and Kurt said to me earlier on this thread.)

Drove around - the ride isn't stiffer or anything bad like that - seems to have a bit better stance too - something the three of us noticed right away. (oh yeah - three sets of hands made light work of this.) I think it is the placebo effect as Rus called it, trying to tell myself is it different/better - but the more I think about it - if didn't change the ride quality and it won't sag when I load it with gear when I go wheeling or whatever, then better to not notice anything different with my driving around town. And with this review - I think the IMS shocks have a lot to do with it too.
