Nice I would go bigger tires but thats me, nice work I had a similar idea just no top. Wanted more room for family and camping gear. Keep it up man.

BenZZilla, bigger tire would look good, but the 33" give me everything I need for my intented use. With my drivetrain/tire selection I'll be cruising at 1800rpm at 68MPH...

Major update to follow later this weekend :)

Like I said thats just my opinion and keep up the great work man!

major update

I haven't updated my build thread in a while but I have been busy ;)

First I had drivetrain selection issues. My original goal was to use a toybox with my 1piece case behind a 700R4 & 6.2 diesel. After a call I find out that they won't be making a toybox for a 1piece case for a while. So I start taking with Georg (Orange45) and Steve at EBI and they both recommend going to a splitcase. So I find a local guy selling a splitcase from an 88 FJ62 for $150. I get that home and call to get a toybox for the splitcase just to find out that it might 3-4 months before a toybox is available. I know Marlin makes good stuff but I don't feel like waiting for them anymore. So a little web searching, another call to Georg, a call to Gary at Mudrak I end up with the following:

NP 203 reduction box and adapter for my 700R4 ($100 local)

Because of the stretch to my 40 I shouldn't have an issue with lenght. I've ordered rebuild kits for both of them.

I also got a change to spoil the workshop a little and got the following off of Kijiji (craiglist equivalent)

60gallon 5hp compressor that I plumbed with copper lines from front to back

and a parts washers

So while I was installing the compressor the 40 finally got its rollcage. Local fabricator built me a cage using ~100 feet of 1 3/4" .120 wall DOM tubing. It's built nice and tight to the body and roof and has 6 frame tie ins using poly bushing to dampen some of the vibration. Here are some pics.

Some of the other stuff that I've done but didn't get a chance take pictures of yet:

1-Tranny hump from Aqualu has been massaged to fit the firewall better.
2-I got my front seats (Corbeau Baja RS suspension seats with sliders and seat risers from a Heep YJ)
3-Rear seat frame is started and should have some slide out draws when I'm done
4-Got a twin stick and a manual to vacuum conversion for the splitcase.

I would like to thank Georg (Orange45) for all the time he spent helping me out with the whole t-case situation.

That's all I can think of for tonight. Things are progressing well and I hope to get this thing on the road next spring.

Looking good... I love it

More pics

Just a few pictures of my front seats installed. They are Corbeau Baja RS with sliders and riser from a heep. The heep riser will make it easier for the people (like my 2 :princess:) to get in the back.

And speaking of the back seat. I've also started working on the rear seat frame. I think I might just put another set of Baja RS's back there too. I will be closing them up and putting a door on the front of them to give me some storage.

Aqualu

How are you liking the aqualu tub so far?
I'm thinking of doing a tub swap and have been looking at their stuff.
Looks nice but it's always great to get real feedback of someone who's used it.
Great build....

NorthFJ,

The Aqualu tub is nice. The craftsmanship is very good. My only complaint would be the fitment of the transmission cover. If you would like to see it in person send me a PM and maybe we could get together during the xmas break

I really like your method of tying the front hoop of the roll cage in to the body. Do you have anything on the other side of the pillar or do you think that will be strong enough? I don't know why I never thought of doing that.

Josh

Josh, I can't take credit for the front hoop idea. I got the idea from a Butch Lewis / Paul Decker design. My fabricator and I modified it bit to work with my Aqualu tub. Not really worried about how it's mounted to the tub. The a-pillar is mounted to the tub and should be nice and strong.

It's been a while...

Sorry if my updates seem sporadic, but I've actually been busy working on the 40 ;)

My last update was just a bit before xmas but I've been crazy busy on the build. During the xmas break I took the entire thing apart to get all the sheet metal media blasted and primed. Once it came back I attached the Aqualu tub to my stock firewall for the last time (I hope)

While the body parts where at the blasters I took the time to take apart my donor FJ62 axle to get it ready for the knuckle / disk brake swap.

I also started to put a thin coat of bondo on my hardtop to get it ready for primer (I'll probably sand most of it off but at least I'll get nice and smooth)

I finally got into some really fun stuff and finally got the drivetrain mocked up and installed. I know you guys like pics so...

WIP of the hard top (takes a lot of bondo to cover a stretched roof ;) )

Motor mount are made of 1/4" wall 4"x4" tube and 1/4" plate. I used the original style rubber mounts and notched the tube to fit over the frame. Then the brackets are bolted thru the frame using 4 Grade 8 7/16" bolts

Fabbed up the tranny cross member using the original cross member from the NP203 and some 1/4" angle iron. More grade 8 hardware thru the frame to hold everything in place. Also got some energy suspension bushings.

Progress is good and I hope to get all the fab worked done by the end of April.

Jetranger, yeah spring might be stretching it (pun intended) a bit ;) I'm at least hoping to get to paint by May.

Cool! That looks like a long drive train... that's got to be nice having a stretched chassis and not having to worry about it
