Maybe maybe not

I know youre not going to want to hear this but I'd do a compression check. See if there is still life in the old f. Can't cost maybe 100 dollars to see if it's a good motor. If so get the hoses back up to par along with the carb and cooling systems. And spend your left over money on getting the wiring and brakes fixed and maybe a rollbar. 40's were never meant to be speed demons. And especially on a budget. There are plenty of 40's rolling around town and on the trail with a F motor.

Gabe, lord knows I love a LC with a Vortec under the hood, but I would not put one in my own FJ40. I've talked prospective customers out of it.

I was thinking about buying an s10 for the 4.3 .. still undecided as of now.

Gabe, what's wrong with the F? Is it unsalvageable?

I took out the F in mine and that was 6 years ago and lots of $$$ and I've still not driven it. I would advise driving it if possible.

If possible I will be. Doing a compression test shortly.

Wasn't able to get a compression tester today so I tried to replace some hose. $40 and the no worky. Can I still get radiator hoses from toyota or sor?

Yes, hoses are still available from Toyota. I ordered a full set from Beno - a couple were wrong hoses, so be specific with what you have on your 40. I think there were more options in 1981, so this might not be a problem for you... Anyhow, replacements went in fine and work fine.

Well I re did the hoses and now the motor will not turn over. Starter spins but not the motor. Look out 350 her I come.

Can you turn the motor by hand?

I would definitely do.a compression test and try to turn it over by hand. The hoses have nothing to do with it not turning over.

I agree that running the old F is going to be your quickest route to being able to get out and enjoy it, but all this SBC chatter makes me think your mind is set and getting the F running and driving will be great, the idea of the SBC will be like that gnat you just can't swat.

Biggest question right now is do you want to drive it around for a while on the tractor motor or do you want to stare at a pile of parts for the next several months (more like years if it were me) while you iron out a swap and all the associated bits. Then when the SBC starts spitting out other parts are you going to upgrade and keep going down the rabbit hole?

Round about way of asking what's the vision for the rig? Sunday driver, hill killer or in between?

How do you turn it by hand? At the fan?

Socket on the crank pulley + ratchet or breaker bar. Just check rotation and try not to turn it backwards
