I’m starting to look into swapping my engine. I have a nasty front cover oil leak near the PS pump and I don’t want to pay the money to tear the engine down to fix it.

I’m looking at LS2 or LQ4 and a 4l80 trans. I know I need to get the adapter for the T case. But is there any little things I am probably missing? I have read a bunch of the threads on here. Do I need a 4L80 4wd trans or a 2wd? Are they different? Is it better to get a Holley terminator? Or use factory ECU and harness or a universal harness? I’ve never taken on a project this large before so this is very new to me.

Just looking for help from those that do this regularly or have done this before. Thanks in advance.

LS Swap thread

You will get a lot of your questions answered in the above thread. But I have heard the 4wd transmission you don't have to cut the output shaft as much or at all.

There is also a company called PSI Conversions, they make a harness to work with an LS swap into a Toyota. You will want to get a couple dakota box to convert signal from the new harness to the Toyota gauge cluster.

As far as the transmission and shifter cable that is a foreign language to me.

I HAVE NOT DONE A SWAP MYSELF.

I will look into these things. Thank you. All the help I can get is very much appreciated.

No worries.

Also you'll need to look into to engine mounts too. Most of the ones on the market require you to cut out the factory mount and weld in new one.

Yea I was looking at those. I do have questions on how to gauge mount placement so I can leave the T-case where it is and use the stock driveshafts. Not too sure how to go about that.

Search that thread that I mentioned above but you will find that Marks makes an adapter or Advance Adapters also sells the kit. You will be able to use the stock drivelines with or without a spacer available through Marks

I found Marks in another post as well. This have been pretty helpful. I appreciate this. I will take any advice or help or links anyone has to offer.

The front oil leak is not had to fix !
How many mile on the 1FZ does it have any other issues?

280k miles. No issues that I am aware of. This isn’t the oil pump seal leak that’s on the front cover, although those screws are seized, whole separate issue but not leaking. It’s a front cover leak, right where the the steering pump bolts up on the back side.

As far as I know, the Whole cylinder head has to come off and the upper oil pan. Steps 1 and 2

IMO - If doing the swap, I would replace the paperclip with an aftermarket unit. I would also do a remote mount tranny cooler and take the flow out of the radiator - I have a B&M unit from an old hot rod build that changed direction that I am considering using. Look through @TLC94LS posts as he did a similar setup to what I believe you are leaning toward. He also posted some youtube videos talking about specific aspects of the build. Also the swap thread that Scott posted is invaluable for information but it will take the better part of a day to read through. I read through and had a word document open and clipped parts that I wanted to explore further and/or incorporate when (and sometimes if) I do the swap.

I used the stock Toyota trans cooler set up. For power steering cooler I replaced
It with more modern one with the cooling fins. I don’t have a trans temp gauge. But my engine temp gauge doesn’t move from the middle. I hear my fans cycle on/off pretty normally. I haven’t put it to a torture test. I’ve driven around town, a/c on. No issues. I Janet down a lot of trail riding in summer heat. Because that’s just miserable out in Texas.

I hear ya. I’m probably gonna go electric fans and just hook them to my switch pros. I have a good electrical guy so I’m sure we can figure out the setup for them.

What did you end up doing for your power steering? Just a generic setup from AutoZone or anything in particular?

Used stock gm stuff. Got a line made at a local hydraulic shop. Not sure why’d you use switch pros to run radiator fans? Whatever computer you’re using to control an LS motor will control fans.

That’s fair. I’m still trying to figure all of this out. I have people that know what they are doing who would be helping me. Just trying to gain as much knowledge as I can going into this.

You kept the LC steering box?

Yes. I’d recommend checking out my videos. I talk some lessons learned. Not to say it’s how to do it. But you can see friction points and ideas to do something different. I’d do some things differently. I would make a battery bus and an ignition hot bus somewhere that is triggered by the Toyota. Many of the boxes you’ll use need either hot battery or ignition triggers. You’ll find yourself needing to splice in again and again. Are
You using a GM computer or Holley system? For engine control?

I was thinking going Holley terminator. But I haven’t decided yet. PSI has a pretty nice looking setup that I was looking into. I also have people who have connections to get me harness’ and computers. Not sure yet.
