Looking for a 40....not me, a friend

Hey everybody, sorry I have been MIA - didn't realize this thread was still going on and I have been underwater at work. I was planning on starting a new thread to introduce my new (to me) FJ once I got it back from Toyota Techs and could snap pictures.

I ended up finding a '78 FJ40 in Winston-Salem, NC and brought it home 1-2 weeks ago. Original color was Dune Beige, it was repainted Green, it has a non-'78 top but the frame, engine bay and driver's door plaques all have matching serials (one oddity is the color code for Dune Beige was not offered in '78 based on that one color chart but another chart did list it). It definitely has some rust spots in the normal areas, and the rear sill is rusted. A few issues have been found (rear main seal leak, e-brake, leaf spring bushings, inboard axle seals behind knuckles, etc. so trying to figure out what to fix now vs. later and what to tackle on the truck).

Appreciate everyone's advice and help throughout the process - I probably overpaid for it, but then recently there has not been a lot of inventory south of $20k even for butchered trucks so I jumped on this one so I wouldn't regret missing another. Also, apologies in advance for all of the posts asking for yet more advice on how to restore it!

Uploading pictures now and will attach later today. Thanks!

I was wondering who's truck i saw there ... congrats !

Before someone says it-he knows the bezel is flipped :)

Looks very good from the outside.

Awesome truck, definitely worth the wait!

Can't wait to see it in person at an event.

Congrats

Congrats! That one looks just like the last 40 I had. I sold it to a guy in Miami. It was a '70. Definitely your 'cruiser's older brother...

Man Dave, you've really got that shiny-up-the-paint thing on level 10.

David .... very nice looking 40. Drive. Enjoy. Repeat.

Toyota Techs said there is a hole in the transfer case that either needs welded or a new transfer case rear housing replaced. Anyone know of any leads to find parts like that that are affordable? I've called junk yards, went to some of my contacts, etc. but no luck yet and am still searching. Welding might be the way to go, hoping that is a viable option that can patch the hole.

If @Roxx doesn't have one (which is unlikely) you might check out the Parting Out section for FJ40's and FJ60's. Someone is bound to have a transfer case that will bolt up.

@Rice may have one disassembled if Rafael doesn't. And krzyabncanuck would be another option. Both a couple hours from you though but not bad.

I have one but i am not in clt. If anybody can get quicker to him that is fine. I am going to have to open roxx junk jard! Dont i?

I have an empty case from a 4-speed '74 which brings about 2 issues:
- getting the case to you from GSO
- If the guts of your case have to be pulled out you may wish to include a TC rebuild kit.
