Looking for a 40....not me, a friend

For my taste, that one's a bit too crusty. But I also suck at body work and rust repairs done correctly = big $$$$$ spend.

My $0.02

From the pics I can't zoom in far enough on my phone to assess the main beam, can anyone see/assess via a laptop? Also no frame pics

Does anyone on mud near our area specialize in swapping out quarter panels and rear sills etc? I think toyota techs do mechanicals mainly right? Ncfj does awesome engine swaps but who does good body work?

And how many thousands should one estimate on this rig to get it "nice enough)?
- 1/4 panels ($300 parts)
- rear sill ($350 parts)
- hood? (No idea)
- rear bed pan... ($350ish)
- other floor panels? (Condition tbd)
- sidesteps( no idea)

If someone dropped another $4k into this would it be decent?

Cheers

Welcome! It sounds like you have been doing the right things in your search but luck has not been on your side. Don't rush the search process. Be willing to let a 40 go that you don't feel good about. Be honest with yourself about your time, money, abilities, and perseverance (projects tend to grind to a halt and never completed)

I agree with Sam. I'm better with a wrench than a paint gun. I can't even wax my 40 without screwing up.

I did not see where you state how you will use a 40. Are you going to wheel it or cruise it? The red 40 you posted would be a perfect wheeler. Get it running reliably and hit the trails as is with no worries. If you want to fix the rust and paint it that could easily snowball into a frame off project.

Having said that, $6k is probably about right for that cruiser. That is what is was seeing about a year ago when I was shopping. Even if you up your budget there will be rust and plenty of things to work on.

Good luck in your search and keep posting what you find. We love to spend other peoples money. :D

@CLTFJ - what's the verdict, are you officially a cruiserhead yet? If so let's see some pics!

MY son spotted a red 40 in Greensboro today. Fleming Rd across from the Cardinal neignborhood. Don't know a thing about it.

Cardinal would be this one. A dreamer thinking he has a retirement plan. He has come down to $25K .... only another $10k to go.

He started at $43K I sent him an E-mail and he replied, delusional

The Craigs List description says a '60 but it looks more like an '80 except for the upside down bezel which is off of an earlier model and the windshield hold down brackets which are later. I don't recognize the turn signals either.

Am I missing something, where is the clutch pedal?

The turn signals are off an early 70 series truck ...

It may well be a cool 40 once it is sorted out, but he needs to keep coming south on his price

He removed the more incriminating pics .... restoration overspray all over the frame, leaks and oil spots, etc. A real mess.

The word restoration sure does not carry the same meaning as it used to

I live literally half a mile from that Red 40 on Fleming. I drive past it often and smile.
His wife pulled me over and was ooing and ahhhing over mine. I paid too much for mine and told her that - but their price is asinine...

By the way, they paid $10k for it (all in) as an import from Costa Rica... And intended to sell it for 40k.... lol.

Anything missing?

Dash pad? An extra diamond plate patch covering something. Not stock seats? Missing the visors. A restoration or just a modification?

And I wonder if the excited buyer will one day puzzle over how to turn on the heat, only to be hit with that moment of dawning comprehension.

Don't need heaters in Costa Rica.

Sadly I've driven by several times to have a look, a laugh, and post up some pictures, but each time there the 40 was not around for viewing. Same street my sister-in-law lives on so feel certain will see it one day.
