I would love to fit a full Slinky 75mm long travel suspension kit but I cannot afford it. So, I've been looking at alternative shock options that would enable me to achieve a long travel set-up. I do however accept, that I cannot expect to get even close to the Icon shocks in terms of quality, when opting for a cheaper shock.

The Icon shocks used in the 75mm Slinky kit are, I believe, the 56511 which measure 16.850" compressed, 28.170" extended and have an 11.32" stroke. These are considerably larger than the OME L.

Iron Man make a shock for the 80 listed as being for a 6" lift with the following specs: Rear 17.284" compressed, 28.740 extended and have an 11.46" stroke; front 16.811" compressed, 28.740 extended and have an 11.93" stroke. See http://cairnstocape4x4.com/files/9814/1211/8058/foamcell-brochure.pdf Now, whilst Iron Man are a budget brand of the same ilk as OME, these particular shocks are their top option and appear to be a fairly decent shock at their price point.

So, if I pair the Iron Man shocks with a set of 75mm Slinky springs, I should achieve a long travel set up as per the full Slinky kit, just with significantly cheaper shocks. Given that I am running 37s I have to slightly extend the bumpstops anyway which will offset the fact the Iron Man shocks are a little longer than the Slinky shocks.

Am I missing anything.....?

why not go even more budget and get the dobinson springs? i have them paired with L shocks and i am super happy. much better than the OME setup i had.

I am sure the slinky set is great but it is expensive. if you are looking to save a few coins and not deal with the FOREVER back ordered log then at least check them out.

Hey Mate,

We have in stock 3" and 4" flexi coils. We pair our 3" flexi with our 4" shocks and our 4" flexi coils with our 6" shocks. Here are the shock measurements.

4"
Front - 26.37" - 15.35"
Rear - 26.77" - 16.02"

6"
Front - 28.66" - 16.53"
Rear - 28.74" - 17.00"

Our pair of coils go for $250.00
Each shock is $125.00

Your travel limiting factor on the front of an 80 series is the control arms not the shocks or springs
You can increase your travel with shocks and springs. The superflex arms from Superior engineering do allow even more flex. I've seen them personally on two 80's here down in Miami and it truly is a nice product and makes a difference!

Something you guys will be carrying eventually ?

Given any shock & spring set up your travel is limited by factory control arms. I do agree if you spend $1200 :eek:plus shipping (last time I checked) for superflex arms you will get more travel over the factory arms.:meh:

What are the spring rates? I replaced the PO's setup of OME 2.5 heavies and pucks with 4" TJM springs and OME L's. I feel that the TJM's are stiffer, the old snail doesn't like to flex as much as she use to.

I ran Doetsch Tech & OME Ls with my Slinky coils before I got the Icons. I'm glad I did it that way because I now know what the coils improved & then what the shocks perfected.

I did the same thing when I recently switched to dual rate. Left the old Fox 2.0's in there so I could see how much of a difference the coils would make. I was very impressed. At the same time I can now see where the old shocks are falling short in certain areas. Nothing against the Fox units, I think for the money you are getting a pretty good shock.

Excellent way to narrow down on your suspension's performance gains, component by component.

Hey David, is there a rundown of all the options available to US customers? Springs heights, rates, use cases, etc? I currently have OME 850J and 860 springs and it sits dead level, but I'm interested in a better coil option to improve ride and loading, but there's just not a whole lot of info that I can find.

We have so many options in coils that we don't list them all in the catalog pages. You can browse the catalog with this link.

4x4 Suspension

The flexi coils we had special ordered from the factory and you won't find them on the catalog. I can still provide answers to all your questions via PM. With the coils you have fitted now, it would seem best to run our 3" flexi coils.

@bug616 why not wait until you have enough money saved to buy the whole icon kit?

I did not know Icon is making a kit  do you have a link?
I don't collect links therefor I have none to share. Turn your focus to the gist of my post, which was a question for the OP, and away from an opportunity at sarcasm. Now, does my post make sense?
