More minutia

This is/was a good thread and taking the info I replaced the instrument cluster and dash pad lights. The dash pad light made a big difference in the amount of light. Ditto for the blinkers, high beam indicator and the speedometer area. I can now see my speed at night. However, I was dissapointed in the amount of light added to the fuel and temp gauges. I can't really notice a difference.

Is that common or what I should experience?

I had similar results. I did not mess with the shields. I replaced the 2 cluster bulbs with these, RAYBRIG R111 Hyper Green 168 wedge 12V5W

www.intakeone.com/Light_bulbs/R103to111_168wedBulbs.html

The speedo and gauges are a bit brighter than they were with the clear LEDs. The OEM bulbs were clear, I suppose, and they are available also, but the green tint is mild and seems to match the lights in the dash pad and for the heater lever. The green reminds me of my grandfather's plymouth. He let me move it for alternate side parking before I was legal.

has anyone installed these in a fj55 dome light? .......ordered one from "tasksled"........awesome improvement in the 60 but way to short to fit in a 55..TIA:cheers:

Alkarich--I did not try the bulbs with the shields installed I just went ahead and removed them. The improvement is huge. Like I said this was really easy to do and well worth the time and money.

LED lights for the fj55

Marshall; this is a great write up:clap:...........any idea of how these would crossover to the fj55s?............TIA;

Who knows what the instument light base # is.

Is it 194/168 wedge base or 74 Wedge Base? Im thinking 74

Ditto, would love to change out all of the bulbs to led. I looked at their site and didn't see the same # of the main bulbs used in the rear brake/turn and front turn signals.

stupid question..... on an early rig (12/71) with the push turn light sockets are the bulbs 194's?

if nobody has done it yet i guess i could pull my dash out but, I would like to see if some has done it yet.....

Thanks

Yo Troll, thought I would bump this thread since I just came upon it. Any replacements of the bulbs since installation? I would assume the LEDs hold up a lot better to the jarring environment of the FJ40 than the OE bulbs...but just checkin'

I have green LED's in my cluster...love them.

FYI, this is with the shields removed around the bulbs...but left the shields that shield the lower gauges...Perfect!

I just did my whole truck tonight. The available LEDs have changed since this thread was first posted. There are a lot of brighter ones now. Here are my results with pics and part numbers from Super Bright LEDs – LED Lights, Bulbs, and Accessories.

Front marker lights. LED (67-W15 Cool White) on driver side, incandescent (#67) on passenger. LED is actually more impressive in person than in the photo.

amber LED (67-A9 Wide)

white LED (67-W9 Wide)

in person incandescent and amber LED are indistinguishable from a distance. the white LED is slightly brighter but not as nice of a color, looks washed out

rear sidemarker incandescent (#67 bulb)

rear sidemarker red LED (67-R9 wide))

rear sidemarker white LED (67-W9 Wide)

IN person the differences are less obvious. Clearly the red LED wins in this case.

Why is red brighter than white but amber is not as bright as white? I suspect that the red lens is a more narrow band filter and is more closely matched to the red LEDs output spectrum than is the case for amber.

Look how much brighter overall the white is than the red. Same two bulbs as above:

reverse lights. In person the difference is much more impressive. The LED is a 4 watt, three emitter bulb (1156-W3x1W). It lights up the area behind the truck very brightly, way more than the incandescent, it makes it really easy to back up at night and see where you're going. Major win here.

tail lights and license plate lights.

Red LED tail light (1157-R45-T) on viewers right, passenger side. LED license plate light (67-W9 Wide) on right side as well.

In person it's just like the photo, the license plate light is slightly better (note how it illuminates the plate better) and the tail lights are nearly indistinguishable.

turn signals. I only photographed the rears:

incandescent (1156)

LED (1156-WW45-T Warm White)

In person there is no difference, they look the same, the LED is maybe a little more evenly lit. I had to install an electronic flasher unit to get them to flash. Downside is it doesn't audibly click, it is silent. Easy install, I had to partially dismantle the connector to the flasher because the pinout was different but it bolted up in the same location as the factory one.

Here is the mixed bag, with a couple fails.

Instruments, incandescent:

dashincan.jpg

Instruments, LED (WLED-6 in white, blue, and green)

dashled.jpg

FAIL: general illumination of gauges. I think this is due to my choice of LED bulb specifically, they don't have enough side illumination. Also I did not remove the shrouds.

WIN: the high beam indicator. I can barely tell when it's on with the factory bulb, now it's nice and bright. In this case the bulb is directly behind the blue lens so the LEDs are shining straight through it.

turn signal, incandescent. These were actually fine with the factory bulb

dashturnincan.jpg

turn signal, LED (WLED-G6).

dashturnled.jpg

FAIL: They are WAY TOO BRIGHT! I'm blinded when I activate the turn signals now. I will go back to the factory bulbs I think, or get some dimmer LEDs. This is a 6 LED bulb. I have a dimmer single LED one installed in my XT225, so I might switch that one in as a test and actually having a super bright one on the XT is a good idea because it will remind me to switch it off.

Under dash light. The factory light is nearly worthless, I can barely pick out that the knobs are there and can't see any of the labels.

underdashincan.jpg

LED (30220CWH-P4). This is a 4 emitter bulb with four surface mount emitters, much brighter than the bulb Trollhole used, wasn't available when he did his. HUGE WIN!

underdashled.jpg

dome light, incandescent.

domeincan.jpg

LED (3710-WWHP6) A six SMT bulb in warm white.

domeled.jpg

In person the difference is slightly more impressive, the LED is significantly brighter, especially in terms of useful light, like maybe if you're reading a map that was resting on the steering wheel. And it uses MUCH less power. I think the factory bulb is about 24 watts. The LED is 3.

Very useful information yooper and well documented.

The reason the dimmer red LEDS in the side marker lights actually look brighter is due to the fact that White LEDS actually put out a lot of BLUE light which the red lense filters out very effectively.
