dieselbigot .. I gotta tell you pal .. you put me in incredible stress each time I see your rig ... it's just amazing job there ..

Love the rig diesel bigot! I was lurking in a pirate thread to see more pics of it for quite a while.

Ok your rig makes me wanna just give up on our rig cause I'll never reach the nirvana that you've achieved there. Very sweet setup!!!

Thanks for the kudos guys. I gotta admit, I'm pretty damn happy with how it turned out, it makes camping even more of a joy than it already is and packing up to leave WAY faster. But the credit all goes to Don at FC Fab. I honestly don't know that anyone else could have pulled this off. I literally gave him a sketch and a s*** beat 62 and he completely surpassed any hopes I had for it. well that and a s*** ton of hundred dollar bills :hillbilly:

This is what he started with...

I've followed IH8MUD pretty religiously since I bought my 62 a few years back but never posted anything before. I love this particular thread and have come back to it many times, since I live in Tanzania and there are loads of great ideas here. Thought I'd add one of my daily driver, which doubles as my 'get the heck out of town' rig and has taken me all over this country. I just had the roof rack custom built to fit my 2-person tent - perfect for camping among the animals!

My little project

Can you give some detailed pics and info on your ladder? How you hooked it up to the roof rack and what kind of bracing you did at the bottom on the body. Any info is welcome...thanks!!

Nice photo. Does your 62 have rear ambulance doors, by chance?

I'll post some photos when I can but the sub rack that extends over the cab has bushings at each end that are then secured to a seperate mounting plate at each end of the structure from there it is bolted to the body. For the additional support and strength for the side and rear, a steel backing plate was installed but for the windshield dog ears tabs were welded to the windshield hinges to secure the front. With the lateral supports unbolted the whole sub-rack & rack itself hing making it easy for one man removal.

The ladder at the top is welded component of the sub-rack, as we found with merely four mounting points it really needed some lateral support. That being the case just thought adding a ladder to one side would be cool and ended being very useful as with the RTT I couldn't access my gear stored at the front.

The Rack itself is a Diamond Rax

Just painted the 40 so still putting her back together but she also has cables from the rack to brush guard to make her just stand out that much more.

I love it. I'd like to see some photos of the trailer too and how you have everything set up.

Great explanation and I look forward to the pics for my visual side. :D Thanks!

Ambulance doors

Yes it does. It's a perfect arrangement because I can have one side open for loading while still having the ladder access on the door that's closed.

Here's how I attached my tent to my HJ62. Not quite an expo rig, but it works great for a week or two away from home, then stores away when I get back. And one person can set the whole thing up in less than 10 minutes.

I don't care what anyone says, I think that's slick! I thought about that very thing instead of having all that weight up top.

I love it. I sleep inside my cruiser but that only takes care of one person.

I've thought about having a RTT but didn't want to dedicate my roof (and wallet).

Do you have any pics of your platform? How does it attach to the rain rails?

^^^ Very nice all around!

The platform is just a roof rack made from tubular steel and covered in some cheque-plate. I used the thinnest cheque-plate I could find in order to keep weight down, and it's pop riveted to the steel in about 50 places. I can take some photos of the pillars later this week and post those, but really its pretty simple - just 4 clamps along each side of the truck. there are some pics of the platform already in the camping and gear forum, where I also posted this same photo. Can't link to it right now cause I'm still figuring out how to use this whole iPhone thing...

Edit: Here's the link to the platform pics on MUD: https://forum.ih8mud.com/camping-outdoor-gear/790465-diy-rooftop-tent.html
