diesel is a more expensive fuel
engines are far more complicated
DEF and regen nonsense
higher total vehicle upfront cost

we want (in a true LC)
low stress N/A V8, cloth seats, no screen, no integrated nav/radio/ac/all other functions, simple, cheap, easy to replace exterior lighting, 6 speed auto or manual trans, lever actuated t case, triple lockers, no computer trickery terrain modes that ties the streering, brakes and accelerator all together as a massive failure point, easily replaceable and upgradeable double din radio, and a tailgate or barn doors

You had me in the first half... that's a bold "we" on the second half.

i think there is a large enough group to want/buy a $10k cheaper LC, with as many reused/parts bin pieces as can possibly be used from the previous Toyota models that put the legendary Toyota reliability on the map. Keep the spaceage body for safety and add the requisite air bags.....but thats it.

Marketed properly, focused on everything you need and nothing you don't, praise the Land Cruiser heritage, and tell us how its designed to go anywhere and last 20 years.

Toyota already makes the rav4, sequioa, 4runner, highlander, grand highlander, LX600....that will go anywhere most of these GX and 250s will ever venture (not the ones here on Mud....the other 95%) with all the bling and tech and luxuries.....now we have the 4runner/GX/250 triplets.

telling me there isn't market for a 'work truck' Land Cruiser? With no screen? With $30 headlights and tailights that have worked for 50 years. No dials and auto lane holding and no hybrid or turbos.

i think it would sell.

sorry for the rant.....i just want a replacement for my simple, easy to work on, manual trans 60 series. A safer, slightly more powerful version of that with a modern 6 speed manual.

I suspect toyota would sell roughly 10 of these a year in the US. I think what most of us want are options, from the poverty pack to the uber lux and all grades in between.
 
If it's that great why do you need a replacement?

brand new bearings
brand new steering
better glass
new and better weatherstripping
beefier A pillars
modern brakes
modern seat fabrics and cushions
modern steel
modern paint
seams sealed
all the benefits in metalurgy and materials science over the past 40 years

notice i didn't say screens, power seats, power side mirrors, terrain modes, dials, $1000 headlights, algorithm controlled steering/brakes/yaw sensors, turbos, 46 way AC and heat vents, hybrid batteries, high compression, super stressed, direct injected engines, and 'stay in your lane' nannies
 
Modern diesels do not stink at all. My F-350 is basically odorless.
Yes, regen's cut into your overall mileage, but it's what allows them to have such clean emissions.
Def is part of the clean emissions. 1 gallon per 3000 miles is not a big deal.
Fuel prices go back and forth and regardless, diesels get far better mileage than gas engines so in cost per mile, the diesels win.
Having been driven around the West Bank in an armored 200 series a few years back, that 4.5L twin turbo was a beast, even weighing in at 10,000 lbs.
3 of my 6 vehicles are diesel and I'd gladly pay extra for a diesel LC or GX.
My 6.7 Ford, at 9000 lbs, has a 0-60 of around 7.5 seconds, it'll scoot if you want it to. Keeping the tires planted in the first few gears is a nice problem to have.
Both modern diesel and gas engines are complicated these days, but overall reliability is excellent so this is a moot point.
Give the consumers the option and let us decided what "we" want.

I know it's apples to oranges, bur I come from the jeep community. Jeep did exactly that when the JL launched. They gave the option of a diesel because people had been asking for it for years. I think it lasted 2 years before they got rid of it. It was wildly unpopular. The initial cost vs MPG value proposition just didn't make sense.

The reality is even if a diesel is offered, it wouldn't sell enough to make it worth it in America.

My bad. Have my most recent 250 photo. Trying to figure out how in the world I want this dash set up. My mind wants a traditional speedometer like a safety blanket even though it has the digital speedo and the HUD. Trying to ditch it and go with just the tach.

The proven, reliable EU spec 2.8l TD powering the 250 delivers 34 mpg with a 22 gallon tank and 7,800 pounds of towing payload. Those are pretty good numbers for off road SUV use (and pretty good numbers for commuters too.)
 
Apropos of nothing, it appears the mental health care in the GCC is lacking.

1GD is ubiquitous in ME,Africa, European and Australian markets. shared with other Toyota models like the Coaster, HiAce, Hilux and now the J70; mechanics know it inside out and one could find spare parts aplenty. That also makes it more appealing when traveling over-the-land. for example a friend of mine travelled from Saudi to the EU in her older FJ and she had a tough time in the Netherlands finding a spare starter for the 1GR. the solenoids were probably interchangeable but she opted to wait several days for the whole assembly, quite the hassle when you're that far from home.
this is also why i do not think it makes sense in the US, because over there the opposite of the above is true in addition to the downsides you listed.
