After losing my beloved low miles 2015 200 series to a hail storm back in March, I’ve spent the last 4 months searching for a low miles replacement 2013-2020 200 or LX to no avail.
I’ve had my 2024 GX550 + since November and really enjoy it but really wanted something I could use as a daily driver and travel rig like I did the 200. The Rivian R1S has been a good commuter car but ive never gotten past the range anxiety so Friday I decided to give a 2025 1958 a test drive more out of curiosity than as a serious buyer.
Oops. I picked it up today, deciding to unload the rivian after 27 months and 20,000mi. (Trying to stay out in front of the inevitable
sharp depreciation decline)
I have to admit, what I really like about the 1958 are the very things most have complained about. Of course I have the GX when I want to ‘dress up’ but for an everyday fun driver, and it’s absolutely crazy how different it is from the GX, but I really think this thing does the trick. While washing it after getting it home, I kept seeing all these signs and details that remind me of a cross between an early 80 (91-92) and a prime years 200 (2011-15).
Yeah it whines w the 4 cylinder. Yeah, those stock tires are an insult to it, yeah it’s got a lot of plastic, and yeah it seems on the surface pretty pricey for the stripped down interior etc, but you know, I think Toyota nailed it as an attempted throwback old school rig.
The seats have the same ergonomics and high positioning I love in my 80. It’s the exact same texture to the plastics as my 80. It’s the same round a/c supply grilles as my old
60, and I love the cushiony cloth seats. It also feels like a stripped down 200 spatially.
It’s got just enough of the basic bells and whistles to complement the old school straightforwardness.
It may not be the old rhino proof v8 monster it was, and likely shouldn’t even be compared to those rigs, but it sure seems to hit a home run on nostalgia and the intangible feel of those classic generations.
I’m eager to give it the benefit of all the doubts on here and embrace the fun it offers.
