The model that’s gets the Range Rover name is still the pinnacle. Hopefully the “Land Cruiser” is the same even if other models have “land cruiser-ness” to them.
You sure about that? This Ford fiesta wears the Range Rover name.

This concept is not even close to the final product. Look at the Ram EV, the REV looks nothing like the sleek concept vehicle.

Toyota touted they made some breakthrough in solid state batteries, allowing for 700 miles of range. If their batteries really are that energy dense then they can make a boxy 4x4 with E-motors and mechanical locking diffs and take the range hit. From looking into Rivians for a long time now the biggest impact on range isn’t weight, the motors are too powerful and just don’t care, it’s the aero. If they take that 700 mile battery and slap it into a boxy shaped vehicle it still might get 500 miles or range.

Toyota and Lexus have been known to scrap vehicles in the past that were very close to production but when that happens it usually is because they have a better plan or better use of resources so I can't say this with certainty but that concept was teased at the 250 global reveal. My guess is we may actually end up seeing this in a couple of years or so.

I going to say “maybe” with all the weight the word can carry. Toyota doesn’t have many misses when it comes to the Land Cruiser name, even the Iron Pig has love. If they switched to that smoothed out, shapeless, crossover people would revolt.

The other land cruisers we love aren't going anywhere.
They will still continue to be offered.
This would just be an addition to the Land Cruiser family.

I won't bother revolting over that. If I don't like it I can just buy another model of the Land Cruiser that I like.

I see where you are coming from in that it could seem they are watering down the LC name..

Personally it isnt for me I'd rather the more traditional ones but times are changing and if they see a market for such a product they would launch it otherwise into the history of forgotten concepts it goes.

Other markets may not have that luxury for many more years.

The LC300 is not going anywhere
It will evolve into the LC400.
The 250 also will not go anywhere and will be replaced by another vehicle when the time comes.

Even the 70 series will most likely get a clean sheet redesign sometime next decade and evolve to another generation.

Key word was 'other markets'. In the US the proposed standards simply can't be met with ICE trucks as we know them. Hybrids can maybe fill some void in smaller SUVs but only in the short term. The 250 is what it is because of current mild (in comparison) standards.

Change your oil regularly and don't skimp on routine maintenance because IF all goes as planned, today is the last of the good ole days.

The 70 Series hasn't had a clean sheet redesign since it was first released. Toyota would have canceled it if not for the demand from mining companies. I'll be very surprised if it gets a full redesign.

The 70 series is very popular and they probably make alot of money on them.

Mining company sales are but a small slice of a very big pie. I'll try and get the official stats.

It is extremely popular in the Middle East, Australia, and in many African countries.
& many other other countries as well.
Not only with consumers but also add in sales from governments and ngos.

The 70 series gets updates every few years to stay up to date with the regulations of its key markets but they are pretty much reaching the limit and the current MY2024 update is good enough to take it into the next decade but after that I think it will have a full model change similar to the transition from 40 series to 70 series.

The updates it has had have been very minimal in comparison to a typical vehicle redesign. Toyota has made very, very little investment in the 70 series since it was released.

It's because they didn't need to introduce an all new generation, yet that is.
So updating it every few years was more feasible.
The regulations in its biggest markets are reaching levels that in a decade or so the 70x in its current form won't be able to keep up with.
They will not give it up.
If they can keep updating they will, if they can't they will redesign it.

I seriously doubt that. Everything I’ve read is that Toyota would much prefer to simply kill the 70 series.

The only time they will kill the 70 series is when they release It's successor.

Do you have the 70 series book?
It's a great read.
Goes into alot of detail about the 70 series.
Not sure which version the latest print is but mine I think is from 2017.

Did you know they considered killing the 70x before the 2007 update and replace it with a family of 105 based vehicles?
Never happened though due to cost related restrictions. They mention it in the book.

Keep in mind, back then (early/mid 2000) the 70x probably sold close to 30k units annually.
In 2014 that number reached ~80k units...so that shows the growth potential in just a few years thanks to a few updates.
Fastforward 10 years I wonder what it is now.

Basically the only time the 70 series will stop is when they have a successor ready to take its role the same way the 70 series replaced the 40 series.

This is from the lc70 book.
the stuff below would have been discussed in the early to mid 2000s when they were planning the 2007 update.

Alot has changed since then.
They have been able to hold off from having a full model change because back then they could keep updating the lc70. How long for though? The day will come when it gets a full redesign.

TOYOTA LAND CRUISER 70 Series

I posted this a few months ago when we got the gx teaser pics.

The side glass design of the 250 was clearly inspired from this (pic from the lc70 book)

We also see hints of that design in the electric land cruiser Se

Looks like it is becoming a prominent design feature of land cruiser. With the exception of LC300..which was designed much earlier than these vehicles. I wouldn't be surprised if a future expensive update in a few years or with the next generation they have the same idea as well.

To me it seems odd to choose an obscure model with few sales and almost no market recognition to lift a design que from. I don't hate it. Just not really a signature bodyline. Although, there's really not a lot of core Land Cruiser design features. The LC200 was pretty generic SUV looking. Not bad. Just nothing unusual. Maybe this will be the new signature look?

I think it looks good. Not sure how you translate that to an LC300 though - it probably requires either lowering the belt line down the doors and side windows or results in a very small rear side window. It's a tricky style element to add to the LC300 design as it currently is.
