Update

I've got the fill and drain plugs drilled and tapped. I'm just prepping for powder with some high temp masking tape I borrowed from the powder coater. I'm going to try and get everything to powder and plating tomorrow.

I have been blessed/ cursed with a tendency to go all or nothing on this sort of thing. Also, I have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to access to tools and machinery.

I dropped off the powder coat parts on Friday and will be stopping at the plater on Tuesday afternoon (Monday is Thanksgiving north of the 49th parallel).

Also I'll be moving my work table and toolbox to the basement for the reassembly because my garage will be off limits for about six weeks. My house is one year old and the floor in the garage has settled and cracked to a point where the builder is replacing the entire floor. I have to spread my compressor/ welder/ blast cabinet/ bike lift and three motorcycles around my circle of friends for storage while they remove the old floor and pour a new one. Then I can't park on it for three or four weeks while it cures. That is why I haven't started a restoration thread on my 45 yet. I threatened them that if they waited till spring they would have to move and store 30,000 loose toyota parts!!

Well - after a few hours and a lot of lifting I moved the tool box and winch project into the basement. The rest went into the shed and under tarps in the backyard. I did get to use my hoist to load my welding bench into the 45.

Update

I haven't pushed the plater or powder coater much because I deal with them everyday through work - kinda hoping they cut me a break on price if I don't whine about time. I have got the red W for the covers in hand and the black for the covers is also done but not picked up yet. The aluminum case parts I'm told should be done this afternoon. The plating is all done and I plan on picking everything up on Friday afternoon as I get off work early (11:00 am) on Fridays.

I've been a bit lazy and have not touched the solenoids or any electrical bits at all.

The garage floor was poured last Wednesday and has cured for a week now. I'm going to do a thread in the workshop forum cause I've got pics and plan on painting the floor with epoxy paint and doing aluminum tread plate base boards 24" high around the perimeter. All before anything goes back in there.

will you use neoprene or rubber gaskets which separate the winch from bumper to help prevent corrosion?

I hadn't really thought about the mounting yet. There was a fair amount of corrosion on the mounting points of both winches so it would be a smart thing to do. I had to drill one snapped off bolt out earlier in the thread. I have 1/8" rubber sheet or 0.100 UHMW (ultra high molecular weight) plastic at work. Also some copper coat or other anti-seize on well torqued bolts would help.

Here are some shots of the powder and plated parts. Didn't get a lot done today. Had to take the kids to gymnastics and then went to watch the Stampeders beat the Lions. That's football with the bigger ball and longer field for you Americans

The color is a bit darker than I wanted but it is actually close to the new motor color. The solenoid covers and the drums are black with a textured finish to mimic plastic. I forgot the red W's at work but I'll pick them up tomorrow.

Please forgive my slurred typing - I just had a big hit of NyQuil. Stayed home from work today cause my little wheeler was too ill for daycare. Didn't feel too great myself. Spent most of the day trying to get off the couch and do something. I finally got downstairs and laid out some parts and did a bit of assembly. Sorry about the pictures - I need a better camera.

Pic 3 - I'll start with these three sub-assemblies. Brake pawl, clutch shifter, upper spur gear/housing.

Started with the freewheel shifter. Installed new O-rings. Dropped the spring and detent ball into the body, depressed the spring with the butt end of a drill bit and snuck the shaft in to retain it. A little grease to lubricate.

Careful not to cut the O-ring when pressing the shaft in. I did, though you can barely see the blurry black bit. I have a bag of ten so I just re-installed a new one.

pic 2 - two done. I may try and buy two new knobs from McMaster Carr on my next order to them. They are not expensive ($1 - 2).

#1 these are the two needle bearings that Warn won't sell separately. The shaft is pitted from rust but the areas where the bearings ride is good. Again, Warn won't sell the shaft loose anyway so I'm using it.

#2 I found a socket that fit perfectly to drive the bearings in.
