Jerry can mount for FJ45

The 4 Plus tire carrier comes with a basket sized for a Yeti45 that you can set 3 carry jerry cans in. It swings out of the way to access the tail gate.

Not sure what your truck has for a bumper but the 40s have a cross member that the bumperettes and step were bolted too. The center plate bolts to the hitch mount and then I just drilled the other 8 1/2" holes to finish bolting it to the frame.

Reach out to Dave Gore and see if it will work with the FJ45.

I would put it on a pivot on the outside so when the tail gate is down the can will remain vertical. Have a pin to lock it in place so it doesn't rattle. I hate can mounted on the side that limit tree clearance.

I also hate gas cans so I did a 12.5 gallon aux tank mounted behind the rear axle. It fueleed on the same side as the main. I put a switch on the fuel gauge and found a balance with 2% resistors to get the gauge to read from E which was empty to 1/2 which was full.

For a simple old school can, there are a number of basket options that you can mount inside the bed. Are you trying to avoid putting the can inside the bed?

On the pickups the frame ends before the bed. The pickup bumperettes when mounted are under bed not behind it. Either need a spare tire carrier custom built to be strong enough dealt with the leverage mounted to the frame's rear crossmember. Or built a bumper for the extension needed which would probably be a better option.

I think Orange Park built a bumper like you’re describing.

Thanks for all the replies.
No, not looking carry gas in the bed, as I sleep there on long trips.
I have a 4" rear bumper with reverse lamps mounted in it, that is attached to a 360*, 2" brush guard.
I would either mount a double pivot hinge into the bumper, a plate to the bed gate or a pipe clamp to the brush guard. However, using the brush guard is my least likely rout, as it would require a thin can and bracket to be practical.
I am hoping there are items out there to work with.
I have added better pics of what I'm working with.

I have been looking at creating an exterior tank under the bed, but the exhaust keeps me from going all the way across and I'm not keen on putting all the weight on the one side.

What’s on your cowl on the opposite side from your snorkel? I borrowed the idea for my basket from @spdwaver many years ago.

There was already a standard basket there before I got the truck. (Owyhee country, Idaho, 2019)

Make a swing out L bracket from that 4 bold gusset up by the tail gate locks. You can put one one each side - the cans will be on the back tail gate side until you release the pins and swing each can carrier to out to side of the truck.

Move the exhaust pipe and put in an aux tank. 22 gals and you get stinking gas on your hands from leaking funnels - plus its way more than two 5 gallon cans out in the sun.

I was trying to stay with the OPs question, limited to one gas can, but yes, I agree that if long range is going to be a regular part of long term plans, the work to install an aux tank is worth it. I modified a steel 40 series aux tank almost 25 years ago to fit up where the spare tire goes (my size tires won’t fit down there anyways!) in my 45.

I just took the hint that he seeks balance due to the statement about an aux tank on one side. He could alway just build one.

I think it was some outfit in Boise that has the 22 gal for a good price - they were listed on this forum sometime back for a 40

I bet I've been on that road, ... in one of our 40s. Good to see you up in Idaho!

I have been toying with a fuel tank. If I go with one, I will eliminate the one in the cab and mount it in the front of the bed, using the entire width of it, with the fill going through the bed wall and the fill outside. But I'm not there yet.

How about this one with some modifications for mounting. I bought one for mounting on the spare tire however I never used it. It seems well build.

Jerry Can Mount
This looks nice but it is made for a specific rack. I might be able to put in on a pivot arm, will need a 360* view of it..
JoyTutus has one for the Rangler that is just under 5", I have been looking at as well.

This my DIY rack. I have a cover similar to yours and have not had an issue with fumes when sleeping in the bed.

I'm looking to do away with the snorkel; it came with it and is basically just for show. However, I will need to fill the hole left behind. That basket might do the job. I have also been searching for the lighted aprons like you have on this early model and see you have a parts site, but no email address.
