FNG in Tucson

Gentlemen and Ladies (are there any ladies out there?) My name is Alvin and I am a Cruiser-holic. Yes, it's true! while this addiction is new it is strong and gaining momentum daily. I live the Tucson, married with a 2-1/2 yr old daughter. I have a 94 FZJ80 with 2.5" OME HD lift, Slee xfer case skid plate, ugly custom front bumper(soon to be less ugly), used to have a roof rack until I peeled it off going under a large tree(oh well, it made a lot of noise anyway),center diff lock switch, Yokohama Geolander AT's 285/75 r16 on 16x8 black steel rims and a lot of Arizona pinstripes. Anyway, Hello, and if any of you are in Tucson or coming this way let me know and maybe we can hit Chivo or any other of the 100's of roads around Tucson. Later

Well my cruiser has officially left the garage today (insured, emissioned and licenced after 2 years of sitting) so I figured I would introduce myself. My name is Patrick and I have a 74 FJ-40 with the typical 4 inch lift, crappy paint and 33's. I am a Mechanic by trade (god, I hate the "M" word) so I may be of some technical assistance to any Volvo owners on the board. Im in the west Phoenix area and have yet to really take the beast off road with the exception of the construction site of BMW NSD or the back road from Patagonia to Nogales due to some reliability issues that have since been resolved. I hope. Anyway, I look forward to meeting with some fellow cruisers in the future.

PM me an E-mail addy if you can. Im horrible with posting pics.

Hi my name is Reuben, I live in Chandler. I used to own and still have wheeling rights to an 87 4Runner which I sold to a family memeber.

I quit wheeling a while back for a number of reasons and I'd like to get back into it.

I'm looking to possibly get into a FJ-40. Before I run all over the country and buy one, I'd like to find a local cruiser head with a mostly stock rig that I can test drive.

Any volunteers?

I'm John, I think I was responsible for resparking Branden's (BMAN) interest into this money pit we all call wheeling. I live WAYYYYYY East in Apache Junction. (actually not too far from Branden, but it always seems so much farther when he talks about it...guess he's afraid of being so close to Apache Junction ;p )

I don't own any Toyota's much less a Landcruiser. Not saying I never would, and not saying I don't have one in my backyard ;) , but at this time I don't. I am a Jeep guy.. *as everyone sneers*, and own an '87 Cherokee with a bunch of stuff done to it. (see my website if your so inclined)

I have already met alot of the guys on this board out on the trail and at a couple of Cruiser Cruises at the Sonic. Maybe I'll get to meet everyone else here soon.

My name's Michael, I'm 27, I live in Chandler, and I'm currently the owner of an '03 Xterra 2WD, that I'll be getting rid of and replacing with (crossing my fingers) an '86 FJ60. I'd really love to own an FJ55 (what can I say, I have odd taste), but I don't have the time/money to dump into building the one I want now, so that's a pipedream. I've always been die-hard Toyota, and I'm happy to be coming back to the fold.

Thanks to Brian (xrock) for introducing me to this site!

Hi TremorX,

just in case you suddenly find money, there was an Iron Pig for sale right by the general store in Crown King (sign on the dash asking $3200, been there for a LONG time, seems like possibly some room for negotiations). Claudia

welcome micheal, yup like dsrtrdr said the one in CK has been for sale a while. looks workable, not too shabby. i actually have had my eye on 3 that i know of sitting in places for a while, thats one of them. maybe i'll bring them all home before too much longer and add to the collection. :-)

I'm sure Mrs. Rhino would love that.

Thanks! Just an update - I got it! It's not an 86, it's an 83... I still have to get it to pass emissions (it smells like it's running rich, and the previous owner failed testing last time; it was putting out too much carbon monoxide) ... it's been a long time since I messed with a carb'd engine, so if anyone has any pointers on getting it smog-friendly, I'd owe 'em one.

Here it is:

Get yourself a copy of the emissions manual. Invaluable. And costs less than $30, IIRC.
I'll bet you that much that the PO or his mechanic hooked up some vac lines wrong. Or some VSVs, VCVs, VTVs, etc are missing/broken/disconnected.
If your cat is working, and all of your emissions controls are hooked up and working, you shouldn't have trouble passing. Just gotta be patient.
There is extensive knowledge in this forum, as well as the 60/62 Series forum, so do your searches there, and post up what you can't find an answer to.

Going through the stuff the guy gave me, it looks like I have the Emissions manual -- for an '81 2FE (same thing, right?) .. I plan on getting a roll of hose from NAPA or somewhere and re-running all of it; a lot of the hoses look cracked and just plain old.

That, plus new plugs & wires, distro cap & rotor, and checking the timing like you said. As for the cat - how can I tell if it's working or not?

It runs like a champ, except for being able to smell gas. The last emissions test said that it was putting out 199 units of CO (40 being acceptable), and before that he had no trouble getting it to pass. However, he did say that he found a vaccuum line disconnected *after* the last test, but would that affect emissions THAT much? I'm thinking it's just the carburator needing a bit of adjusting, but could it be the cat?

 , sorry for the derail, there :P

CO = running rich, but not misfiring. Cat's supposed to turn it into CO2.
Easiest way to check a cat is to swap in a known good one and see if it passes. :D
Do the tune up. Adjust your valves. Re-run all the vac hoses. See if you pass. If not, it pretty much has to be the cat.

If you run into more issues, start a new thread. This one is already pretty long.

Ah ya can drop that off in my yard in Sedona, and she does not have to know... But don't expect it to be there when you come back ;)

Hello everyone, my name is Matt I live in Show Low. Drive a 74 FJ40 mostly for trails. new to land cruisers in general I bought this one last September and have been lurking around here ever since, this is a great site with lots of information for those of us who have the desire to learn. oh, by the way I'm looking for a group to go wheeling with, not too much here in this area. I also have a 94 truck for sale in the classified forum, would also consider any trades? just looking for some clubs for FJ's in AZ that I could join, thanks
