lol, so im back in cooling territory again, and might as well put it here.

specs again so you dont have to reread the thread, turboed 1982 hj47 troopy :)

so since this i started this thread more then a year ago, its been perfect... until about a couple months ago. i noticed some dried red around the thermostat housing and didnt really do anything about it for a while until i realized it was actually coming from the hose and not the housing, so i just clamped the hose up tighter and no leak. during this time again, the temp would stay normal at the 1/4 mark but often when first starting it for the day. the temp would rise to the halfway point, chill for a minute, then go back down to normal. if I drove it on a long hill it would start to get warmer but never really past halfway. this weekend however i did a trip through the interior and it was super hot, like 37, and every hill, the temp would get up to 2/3 and some times just tickle the red line line. my assumption was that i was just dealing with air in the system again, so i burped it today but only got a small amount of air out and i needed to squeeze the hose to get just that air. fan clutch feels like it should. no leaks in radiator, reservoir is full. i wont know if ive fixed it with that small bubble release till i can climb some hot hills, but would love any thoughts or statements about "that little amount of air wouldnt cause that, its definitely..."

I feel like the symptom of it getting hot to the halfway point and going back down at the start of the day is telling of something.

Its a hundred degrees out, your engine is going to run hotter especially working harder pulling a grade that it does when its 75 out.

Maybe your thermoset is starting to go bad. Perhaps the little bleed by port is plugged.
Check your radiator fins and make sure air can get threw - spray water threw from the engine side and wash out the trash that can block the air flow
If its not boiling over then its working.

Tickling the red line is not acceptable in my view.. that's likely over 100degC.

Here's my checklist for an overheating 2H.. pay particular attention to the comments on the viscous fan hub. My own 60 series 2H will climb a big hill on a 41deg day with the A/C on and still only be at the 2/3rd mark at the top (95deg). It'll come down from there fairly quickly once the hill climb is done.

well i really like that last sentence hahahha :) its got some bugs in it but nothing crazy but will still blast it out tho. I have a brand new thermostat from when i started this thread hahaha so maybe ill chuck that in. bleed by port? i googled that and didnt get anything solid, what is that and where is it so I can check it? thanks!

holly jeez, your thorough documentation never ceases to amaze me. just read through it at work, and will go through it again with the car later today. I keep forgetting that the rad can look full when its not, so hoping that that is the simple fix, otherwise im hoping its just he thermostat that needs replacing. The initial spike to halfway at cold start feels like a sticky thermostat not opening when its sposed to. and maybe getting stuck open more then its sposed to, and when not a crazy hot hill day it stays in the normal cool zone, but inst open enough when it needs it. fingers crossed. always, thanks for your sage like help @duncanrm

Definitely use an OEM thermostat only.

The 2H coolant fill is generally not problematic, covered off in that guide. Wild swings in temperature is often a sign of low coolant. Doesnt sound like yours to be honest.

I do see a quick uptick in the coolant temperature when the thermostat first fully opens - then it comes down.. I dont think this is visible on my factory gauge - I really only watch the digital Engine Guard display and I'm only talking an uptick from 67 -> 77 and then it generally resettles at its happy point of about 74deg.

If you dont have an Aisin Hub fitted you definitely need to swap it out. Dont assume that your hub is working well even if it is Aisin, if its old I'd replace it (understanding that its not cheap though!). I am yet to come across a reliable test that confirms a hub is working well.

shes definitely OEM :) all I can say about the hub, is it feels like its always felt, nice and thick to turn, so Im gonna rule that out for now. will swap the thermostat first since I got it and see what changes.

update: replaced the thermostat on the weekend and it had an aftermarket one with rubber seals in it that were bubbled. it no longer goes to half way on the guage before going back to normal. I havent got an opportunity to highway driv e uphill in 40 degree heat yet, but I think that was the problem :)

There you go. New parts aren't always good or good for long. Start with the easy stuff and work your way up.
