Interesting thoughts from Toyota regarding the 250 in this week’s Automotive News

I don’t see the Prado name anywhere on it? Do the new overseas Prados say “Landcruiser“ anywhere in their badging? The quality and durability of the 250 is Toyota based, not LC or Prado based. As MotoDave said, if you want to split hairs, the 70 series is the only “real” Landcruiser left, and arguably has been that since they ceased production of the 80 series. That doesn’t diminish the 100 and 200 in any way, but they are not solid axle farm and forest rigs.

I’m willing to bet,”Not a real Landcruiser”…was said about every “new” model in the usa since the 60 series

Granted that this is a Prado, it sure seems like a Similar vehicle capability as the 100 series.

Until I see a “Prado” badge on it, (maybe that’s how it will be badged in Oz etc, and if so, I’ll recant) it’s not a Prado.

I just took a look at Toyota Australia and while they do badge the 150 as “Landcruiser Prado”, there is not a sniff of info on the 2024 LC on their site. I wonder if this is a non-Oz unit?

In summary. A commentary questions the now crowded 4Runner segment since it will share many components with the 4Runner and many buyers will cross shop the two vehicles. The second article is interesting in it admits the hybrid version will not support 2030 goals and further electrification or alternative fuel systems will be necessary to sustain.

We've had 3 different hybrids and not one of them got even 1 mpg better than it's gasser equivalent. One, a Subaru, got WORSE mileage and the only reason they were selling any was that there was a federal subsidy for them. And as for build quality, one of my Tacomas was built in Mexico and it had excellent fit and finish. The problem was all in the design of the transmission that could never decide what gear it wanted me to be in. That was a Toyota problem, not a Mexico problem.

Subaru Crosstrek hybrids were very underwhelming.

Our Highlander Hybrid routinely hits 35 mpg (EPA rating), has never gotten below 30 mpg, and has had several tanks in the 38-39 mpg range. This is in a 5,000 pound, 3-row crossover. Toyota knows how to make hybrids that actually work. The turbo 4/V6 ICE versions are rated at 24-25 mpg combined, so the hybrid bests them by a whopping 10 mpg/40% increase in fuel economy.

Hybrids are like direct injection twin scroll turbos, they only get better mileage if you drive them that way. If you constantly use the turbo or hybrid to go faster instead of more efficiently, then you will obviously not get the stated mileage.

I could regularly get almost 30 mpg in city with my turbo when I kept RPMs below 1800.
It pulled butter smooth from around 1050 rpm.

You would need a suburban to fit all I had in my Hybrid Sienna.

I can imagine. When I got out of yhe Air Forfe I installed home theater equipment for a local business and the owner used a Grand Caravan. That thing could hold a ton of cargo for its size.

The more I ruminate, the more I like the idea of the turbo hybrid in Land Cruiser 250.

It is, relative to past U.S. Land Cruiser power plants, objectively better for remote travel and dirt touring, which is Land Cruiser's longstanding core purpose.
