I'm 18 And I'm driving my 68 fj40 1500 miles across the US, what do I need?

the money is tantalizing but I can't let that be my motivator right now, I've got to be stupid and young for a while before I can give in
Stupid and young means child support, debt, and the cruiser being sold off to help with the bills from what Ive seen that typically lead too-not worth it. Ive seen it many many times. Start off smart, not stupid.

Nice story and welcome to the madness! A long time ago I drug my MI cancer stricken 40 to NorCal and sort of rebuilt it. We moved back to MI for school and I had to drive my 40 to AF drill for multiple 300 mile round trips wearing my flight line ear defenders to offset my flapping STC top and 350 and had to lay a heavy coat of Rainex cuz my wipers still don't work. That stuff let me drive through torrential downpours in Detriot and ice storms on other trips. I didn't have heat either. I was back in school then too. Good luck!

Don't listen to the nay sayers. I enjoyed college and came out relatively debt free thanks to a co-op program. You can always fall back on your mechanical ability.

Boone is a great town. Enjoy the journey. What are you thinking of majoring in? I have a coworker whose son will be there in the fall.

Easy drive! Did it last year from Pueblo, Co to Elizabeth City, NC in my 78 fj40! Only broke the rear pinion and one wiper arm, plus the alternator fell off once during the trip.

Oh yeah, I've had my rear pinion nut come loose on me twice. I've also had my drive shaft bolts come out so check those too.

great thread ... enjoy school and your 40, maybe not necessarily in that order ... the school experience will be a highlight of your life even if now it seems like a pita sometimes ... tough decision to resurrect your 40 after the accident (some would have taken the easy way out) ...

Appalachian state in boon NC. Im headed from denver CO
Now that is a good school! You will love the weather there--beautiful country for sure.

if anyone lives around the Bonne area, It would be great to have some place to work on my car for like a day. Its hard to do much more than top off my fluids in the super sloped parking lot I park in. Also my transmission and transfer case leak like crazy now, so If anyone it good at replacing seals on those feel free to give me advice, I have replaced the front and rear output seals but they leak now so I'm feeling like it's time to get someone more experienced involved. PS I could totally pay anyone back with my own time I do a fair bit of metal, carpentry, and electrical work plus I'm a bike mechanic and I could bake you some killer cookies. Oh last thing my odometer rolled over to 0 for what I imagine is the second or third time on my drive so I'm currently rocking a 68 with very low miles!!!!

Thanks for the update.
As for working on your rig, doesn't the skool have a simple garage for students to do preventive maintenance on their cars?

X2 on 3.70 gears. A set should only set you back $100.

Rubber overdrive also goes a long way.

I did a 3000 mile road trip in my 74... Take it easy and enjoy the scenery.

I'm in Asheville, about 2 hours away. Try old north state cruisers in the clubhouse section. There should be someone closer
