I need first hand info on a locker for my fj40

With the proper driving technique, the auto-lockers are supposed to click as you corner. It's "unlocking", allowing you to turn without chirping the tires. The click and clutch in low speeds turns on pavement takes some getting use to. Also driving on ice. The rear tends to want to go sideways more often and if stopping on ice, it can cause a wheel to lock up and make that awful BanG!

I like my Aussie locker, but I would prefer an ARB selectable if I had the $$. :)

Detroit for about 8 years and it barely makes a sound. Love it but would have an ARB if I could$.

Later,

ARB

I have ARBs front and rear as I drive it daily and more importantly I drive it in snow and ice. Full rear lock on ice is an E-Ride.

The two obvious choices here seem to be ARB or econo Lockrights. Both have advantages and disadvantages, most of that not so much centered around how they work, but more-so around affordability. Lockrights are more affordable, but normally not very highway managable. ARB's are pricey, quiet, but give no on-road advantage whatsoever. I absolutely love the choice not mentioned here yet: the Auburn LSD!!!!! Why?
(a) Auburn was able to design this unit to give the tire with the MOST traction the greatest amount of "percentage of efficiency"
(b) On-road and Off-road traction 100 percent of the time.
(c) Priced in the middle of the pack, more than Lockright and less than ARB.

I have an ARB in front, and a power trax "no slip" in the rear. Like the both. If Cost is a factor, the I like the no slip better than the lockright. If cost isn't a factor, the ARB is tough to beat. Only issue is the internal seals have been known to fail. You'll also need an on board air source.

ARBs front and rear - 19 years old. look like new and function like new

Does anybody know where there is a tech tip on installing an ARB in the rear of a 40? I havent found one....and Im tired of sleeping with the locker under my pillow.

Search on setting up a third member. Unlike "Lunch Box" Lockers an ARB install requires setting up the gears again. The process will be the same as if you were re-gearing a third member.

My 0.02 is pull the thirds and take them to a shop. Or let a shop do the install except for the air and switches if you don't feel comfortable drilling and tapping your differential housing.

Howdy! TJM is offering an air locker for the 40-60-80 series according to their web site. <www.tjm.com.au> They list a dealer in the US. They don't list prices. John

ARB is the only way to go. F&R in my 80 and 40. Check out best prices at Alljeep.com.

Had the Lok-rite, it was fine, noisy, lasted 5 years...
Put a Detroit in, quiet, love it.
If I had twice the money, I might have got the ARB.

ARB all the way. My cruiser is my DD. taken on many road trips and back road excursions as well. Being the DD I never look back forking out the extra cash for selectablity. its great off road too know exactly when that rear end is gonna be locked and when its not and especially for us canadians where ice and snow is common occurrence on and off the road.

Another ARB vote here!!! Only way to go... (I got sick of breaking Lock-rights and EZ lockers).

Besides, with all the ice you have to drive in during winter you'll want to be able to turn off the locker (I've lived in Kansas).

Just an FYI on auburns, they work well if you have a small (sub 35") tire. Mine worked great with my 34x9.5 swampers but does not work at all with my 38x11 boggers. I did not expect it to- it was by no means designed for that.

Chess, You want a locker so your 40 "Kicks more ass":hhmm:

For a street-only driven 40, I wouldn't want a locker at all. Maybe a LSD, but not a locker. Un-fun in snow and ice.

Why don't I just send you some ARB stickers;)

Ed

ARB if it is in your budget, especially if its you DD.

Having said that, I went with an Powertrax no-slip (about $130 more than a Lockrite). Works great, no noise 1 hour do it yourself install and so far has held up for 5 years and over a dozen Rubicon runs.
