HZJ73 runs rough on cold mornings

My hdt on cold (below 40F) startups starts fine but then takes the 15 minutes to clear smoke. Not a glow, but more than likely valve seals. I baby until block is warm and I would pull off on hwy to not cause too much of an issue. Have a new head to build up in garage but just lazy. When am temps are 45-60 i have basically no issues.
—also this is at 9,000’.

If you do want your injectors fixed ONLY look at having then rebuilt unless your net worth exceeds $1.3 million.

$1.3M is the new $150K

We're lucky enough to have a bitchin diesel injection shop near us if needed. Ended up going new for my injectors but they did my pump and kicked a$$ quickly for a fair price.

I'm thinking it's likely the glow plug resistor after reading JDM Journeys write up about it- basically the same symptoms. So, I'm starting with that we'll see how it goes. Mine's kind of a similar issue, but I'm rolling coal with white smoke below 40 degrees or so until the engine warms up. I've gotten some strange looks from my neighbors in the morning.
If is my injectors, guess I'll have to live with it, bc my spare 1.3 mil is tied up in foreign accounts at the moment. 😉

It's more than just a rough start, it's 15-20 minutes of running rough until the engine is up to temp, then it smooths out and runs great.
If it is 15-20 min you probably have a airleak in your fuel lines . Shouldn’t take more then 30 seconds on a cold start for the idle to smooth out and the smoke to disappear

Vaccum leak!
Air is being sucked into the fuel line.
Use a section of clear hose. Start from the IP to fuel filter and work your way towards the tank.
Air bubbles are the clue. No air bubbles and you want a firm primer especially after an overnight. Primer should only take a couple of pumps to stiffen up after sitting overnight.
For s***s and giggles I have an extra 6' of fuel line on one of my units, our pumps have no issues sucking up fuel if there are no Vaccum leaks.

If that is the case, wouldn't it do that in all weather and not just cold weather starts? Now that it's summertime, the old 1HZ starts and runs completely smoothly, even before it's up to temp.

Ah!
If great when warm, then glow plugs.
Thinking that I read some additional post.
Still a stiff primer pump is a good sign no matter what you do.
We have many, many Toyota's in our underground mines, I always tested the primer as a force of habit just to confirm the chances of a decent start. You never knew what happened on the previous shift.

Is there a manual primer pump on the HZJ trucks? If so, I had no idea! You guys drive landcruisers around in the underground mines for transportation?

Yes we do. The longest living and toughest vehicle around.
I've had the pleasure since the early 1980's.

Just looked and mine has one of those too, never knew that it was a primer! 😂 Would that be for priming the fuel lines after changing the filter?

I was out in the backcountry with no service for a few days but if you have further questions let me know. It's been a few years smoke free now and smooth starts everytime. You'll get there too...
That sounds great, thanks for the offer. After reading about your plight, I'm trying the glow plug resistor first, and if that doesn't work I'll look into other options. I'll likely have to wait until September when the mornings cool off again to see if that fixes the smoke issue.
