Huh weird??? I think as long as it comes with the newest version of the software which is 12.24 or something you should be good.
Mine was the J2354 with firmware 1.4.1.
You could try this one and see if it works, not as cheap as the others but not as expensive and the $70 ones. At least you have a direct link for the Techstream software to download and install via a Vbox session on this thread.

It was the pan300 mini vci but the model I ordered is showing as no longer available. It came with a disc that allowed me to run it with the latest version of Windows. Problem was that the instruction video in one of the files was in Chinese and the various Keys provided never worked. I tried this method provided by the OP and it worked without the key notification. Currently working through why it won't show certain features and things like ahc pressures
OK, so I got a VCI cable but the CD was physically damaged. The MEGA download doesn't seem capable of giving me the firmware driver needed to use the cable. Is there some trick to this?
Mac or PC? Is Techstream giving you an error message or is it just not working at all?
I’ve used both and I believe both my Mac and PC downloaded and installed the drivers/kernels for the cable automatically.

I found a post in this thread pointing the user to configure the VB settings to match the port from the host machine. That did not work either. Here's some of what I'm seeing:

It's USB. Looks just like everyone elses. Says 'MINI-VCI J2543 Standard OBDII Communication Interface'
Here's where my mac says the device s located: /dev/tty.Bluetooth-Incoming-Port
And my VB always says 'Invalid Settings Detected'

How many ports do you have on your Macbook? Have you tried moving to a different port?
I tried all the ports. Eventually one worked! But techstream gets hung up while connecting on a screen that says S303-31 or something like that. Should that step take more than 5 minutes?

Probably shouldn't take 5 minutes but does take a bit for those steps to read.
We’re thinking this issue might be with the VCI firmware or missing driver. @ljschnel is using v1.4.x the cable I have uses v2.0.4.
And FYI ... I found this in a forum dedicated to these devices.
The knock off cables use 1.4.1 or 1.4.6 (latest). The “real” cables use 2.0.1 or 2.0.4 (latest). They are all fake of course but the good fakes use the same firmware as the real Xhorse cable. The 1.4.1 firmware does not support active tests. The cable will work on 10 year old Toyotas like some in the GS forum have said but they will not work on the 2011 Prius as some on PriusChat said.
So I would make sure when ordering that the listing indicates the cable firmware version is 2.0.x.

Interesting!!! For what its worth, the one that I purchased is one linked in first post from Amazon and has shown that has Firmware 1.4.1. Utilizing I had not issues with it (other than attempting to record only yielded a few minutes worth) and have not had any issues with "active" tests. But I have not conducted many of those.
I bought the one linked in the first post and now the link is dead. That seems to happen with every one of these links.

Yeah... can't really blame it as they are all aftermarket knock-offs of the real thing.
Doing some digging though it looks like @jtb517 is right... I found this website that looks to be legit and is selling multiple cables. The J2534 chip is what is needed to be able to communicate with the Toyota ECUs it seems like and the Firmware 2.0.x is the most current release of the chipset to communicate. Newest version of the TechStream TIS software is 13.00.022 according to them but the cable with the update firmware doesn't come with it?
This whole techstream experience is super confusing. Two days ago the cable was inexplicably found by my VM. Now that VM won't even start up.
Created new VM. It again cannot see the cable.
I find it hard to believe all the folks in this thread saying it was so easy and just works. That has not been my experience at all.

I got this to work - it's just unfortunate that I cannot provide any constructive advice from my hours of struggle. Congrats to those who got tis to work easily. I did not, but ultimately 'turning it off and turning it back on again' got everything to work. Just a real PITA.
