I've noticed that some OEM tops have a brass grommet in the front corners (grommet like a tarp grommet). All connected with a bolt with a dome head nut.

Any one got a picture of tarp grommet/ domehead nut configuration?

I have the screw in type twist locks and with the tool I borrowed from OCD I installed mine. The other end of the tool fits the oval part of the twist lock for installation.

Thanks,
Now that is clear is there a threaded scew hole up there on the windshield frame that the acorn nut screws into? If so what size acorn bolt do I need?

There is a hole there for attaching the hard top on mine. Regular 6mm bolt and nut I'd guess.

It has been a long time but I believe the hard top installed from the factory with a tapered phillips screw that went thru the top barcket and then thru the windshield with a acorn nut on it. At least that is how I remember my 68 was when I bought it in the seventies. Could probably check my 76. I don't believe that top has ever been off.

This way makes the most sense. That way the same hole as the hard top would be used with the soft top. Starting in the mid sixties FJ40s were set up to have either or. My after market tops all had the snap up by the glass just below where the hard top fits. But these were all aftermarket.

Yes, there is a tapered hole for the phillips screw on the back side and an acorn nut on the front. I know because I need to stop at the hardware store on my way home and pick up a pair. Putting the lid back on and didn't have any when I bought it.

How many twist locks total did you use.
I think I count 14?
6 per side and then the two on the front corners?

Still looking for an answer on this.

I only used 4 per side - 1 in front of the zipper and 3 to hold the roll up flap. You can use as many as you like, though. Mine seems to hold okay. :meh: I don't have any on the front corners by the windshield. There's not that much material on mine. They just hang loose. This is on a Paki top from one of the very first orders. From the looks of it, they started adding more material on later orders. I could maybe add a twist lock to the very top of the windshield, but I wouldn't get near the acorn nut.

YMMV

I used five per side. One in front of the B pillar on the small piece and four on the big panel. Then one one each windshield corner.
