I have a 86 runner I picked up cheap it came with a mint conditon rear seat delete.
Basically you remove your rear seat and it makes the back like a truck bed.

A pic of this thing.

It is pretty rare. I've never seen one in person, and I've only seen one on Ebay, but I'm not looking for them.....

I'd keep it if you have the room, or a nice garage wall to hang it on...

Welcome to MUD!!!! :flipoff2: Glad to have you, now where's the pics of the 82? :D

Not too sure about rare, at least here in Kansas, the Toyota Dealers here in Wichita and Hutchinson got a lot of them (84s, 85s, and 86s,) that way, and put in some kind of non-factory rear seat that had matching material for the front if the customer wanted a rear seat. The dealers here sold basically 2 kinds of 4Runners, Bare Bones with dealer add ons (rear seat) or SR-5s with everything on them. I think they were just trying to upgrade low cost 4Runners for more profit. In fact a couple of my friends back then bought red ones without the rear seats. I think the most basic 4Runner came without the rear seat, but most people opted for the SR5 which included a rear seat. There are still a few running around that I see have the aftermarket back seat add on.

The no-rear-seat truck is more plentiful than you realize.

They came about as a way to get around the passenger car quota that was in place during that time period. 4Runners that came into the US with a back seat were considered "passenger cars" and those without were considered "trucks".
To keep them from counting against the number of passenger cars that they could import Toyota brought them in as trucks and paid a higher import tax on them. The vast majority of them had rear seats added after they got here.

The Wichita Toyota dealer would take 4Runners during that time period, add rear seats, and other stuff, and tack another $1500 to the sticker price for about $200 worth of stuff. For the most part they got away with it, and that is why I bought my 4 Runners in Hutchinson and Emporia. The Toyota Dealers there didn't pull that crap like Eddy's Toyota did.

One thing I noticed back then was when I would travel I would see 4Runners in colors you never saw in Kansas. Were there colors you could get in some regions and not others?

For the record my 86 SR-5 was Aztec Gold with a white top and every option but the turbo. The Hutch Dealer told me that was the only one they ever saw in that color but after they sold me mine, other customers wanted one the same color, and they sold 3 more. Mine was the only one in Wichita that color for a long time. Sales staff at Eddy's told me they had never seen one that color.

My 4Runner falls into that group. Where are all these rear seat delete options? I've never seen one. Didn't know they existed either. Were they removed and tossed into the scrap pile after a rear seat was installed?

So Dan, is this the part number? 58401-89101. If so, Toyota is mighty proud of that part.

Which raises another question then should I run out and get a truck plate since my 4 runner technically is a truck or imported as one?

When I lived in CA I had the option. As long as I kept the back seat in, and left the top on, I could register the truck as a car and not pay the weight fees. As I recall through, lift laws are different between vehicles registered as cars and trucks, with trucks having more advantages.

Found a 4 runner online that has that option.
Just for grins this is how it looks.

You would also be surprised how many of those rear seats were installed at the port, to avoid the terriffs. I swapped the rear seat delete option into my '85. I love it for the storage room, but was disappointed to find out it was 5" short of being able to fit a twin air mattress (length wise).

Sorry for the poor picture of mine, but it gives you an idea of what it looks like.

5, A white 86 is parked about a mile or so south of me. A rusty 86 with the rear seat delete option.

I also have one in my parts pile. Came out of my 85 4runner before I parted it.

Jim's work truck came that way. That bed front thing is hinged, to flip up. I have always wondered if there was something missing or if that was just another place to hide your stash.
