A friend of mine has a 86 4Runner, he hit a concrete barrier and did all kinds of damage to the steering. Everything is replaced, then he noticed this. I'm thinking he should replace it. The shaft splines are twisted just to the nut. What's the opinion here? Thanks

I’d say that’s toast. Looks like he twisted the splines in the sector shaft. The sector shaft may be able to be bought from Toyota or if find a used Toyota box to replace it

OK, thanks. Surprisingly hard to find good steering boxes nowadays.
 
I got mine from rock auto (87) almost 2 years ago and so far so good. Price was very reasonable. Swapped it out on my lunch break.
