How does the gas tank on a 55 work? (1 Viewer)

That's an aftermarket long-range tank, NOT factory. There should be the pickup and return line in the corner where your light is.

No, the fill vent should NOT be full of fuel unless the tank is too. It simply vents air past the fuel when you're filling up.

Yeah.......

This was the first rinse.:doh:

Good to go now.

Pig let me down (again). After ten or so hours of tank games, new fuel pump, and a new fuel line it still did the same thing. Runs all day long at lower rpm, and kicks the bucket when you need it most.

Kind of depressing. Drove it to work today and almost didn't make it. Then I limped to the parts store, and almost didn't make it. It's really annoying to be in a rig that's as much fun as this 55 is, and have gremlins pissing in your cheerios on your way to work and kicking you in the nuts on the way home.

Bought an electric fuel pump for $65. Too bad I couldn't make it home; dead on the road 200 yards from the parts store. So I rig up the electric pump with some tape and spare wires and limp my dripping soggy cold arse home.

Spent some time in the snow tasting fuel and getting crap in my eyes. Bolted it up, wired it to an acc curcuit, and looped the ground wire to a toggle (figured it would make a nice hidden kill switch).

and..............

She'll do 75 all day long (maybe more; kinda slick around here right now). YAY. Up hill, down hill, donuts, snowbanks, sideways power spins.

I've only driven my pig about three times in 12 months because I just didn't trust it. It's been awhile since I felt comfortable with going on a roadtrip. It's an awesome feeling. If I weren't working eight days a week right now I'd be on the way to Moab.

Best I can figue the fuel pump lobe was worn out or the parts store has been giving me a pump with too short an arm.

Have you checked fuel pressure? I ask this because I have been where you were - limping, cold, wet, snowy, fuel all over, etc...

When I put a 3FE in my Pig, we went electric fuel pump. Unbeknownst to me, debris from the tank was clogging my pump inlet. So I prefiltered the pump and things got better - kind of.

Then I found that my return line was clogged! Argh! Then things got much better...

Have you blown out your feed and return lines?

Was this part of the weird idle/rough running issue I read in some of the 3FE threads you started?

sorry-hijack over :D

i have been having similar issues, till i got my fuel tank reconditioned. i am assuming you have changed you fuel filter. i was doing it every other time i filled up. as well like already mentioned, you will have to blow out all the lines with compressed air.
also there is a little filter membrain where the supply line to the carb is attached. mine had been blocked with very fine debris, leaving me to wonder how much a fuel filter can remove.
seriously, it sounds like you are talking about my truck 6 months ago. strangely, check your dizzy cap and rotor. mine would run fine at low load, then i would speed up and it would die. i checked the cap and button, they were super dirty. i wonder if it can run fine under low load but when load increases the heat lost from the spark increases resistance from button to cap, causing it to miss fire, not not fire at all.
don't know if this is clear, good luck and keep us posted.

No return line. I've got a filter before the elcetric pump and another before the carb. I'm running msd box, coil, and dizzy; spark rocks the house down.

It's still a bit boggy but 85% better. I'm probably going to slap a new carb on it before camping season.

I have not checked the pressure. Should I be worried about regulating this set up and installing a return line?

It was flat out FUN to drive today. Super slick, black ice, cars in the ditches. Pulled one out on the way home from work. I love it when the pig is running well.

Absolutely you should. My electric pump was building about 70 PSI in the rail of my 3FE when my return line was plugged.

Factory spec calls for 35 PSI for 3FE.

Your carb would probably like to see about 5 PSI so the floats can do their job.

I am afraid you may be building excessive pressure, running too rich, and washing down your cylinder walls with gas. What does the oil on your dipstick smell like? Oil or gas?

Just out of curiosity, why no return line? What year Pig are you working on?

73. It's never had a return line as long as I've owned it. The pump is rated 5.5-9psi. I assumed anything around 7psi give or take a couple would be fine.
Chevy 350 with a carter afb (600 cfm if I had to guess). It's essentially an edelbrock 1406 from what I've gathered.

Thanks for the heads up; I'm going to look into this deeper before I wreck something.
