Hey everyone,
So with the recent thread about the 60 being stolen, the kill switch idea is being tossed around. So without getting very specific on your own personal truck, any ideas for 60 series kill switchs?

Thanks,
Zack

I've heard of some guys using a cigarette lighter ... did a google search (Ignition Kill Switch) and found this from some Miata folks sounds like fun ... http://www.miata.net/garage/killswitch.html

"Breaking" the ignition is probably better then the battery because you don't have to deal with the high amperage.

Going the battery switch route, the switch is going to be a lot bigger and harder to hide unless you use some sort of relay.

We used to you Cole Hersee switches on emergency equipment ... never saw one fail .. take a look at their web site .. lots of good info on battery isolation, switches, wire etc .. in their info section.

Keyless entry (alarm also) was instaled in the 62. The alarm no longer works properly...but there is a kill switch that is on unless you use the keyless. A little more involved.......

Switch in 60 tucked behind duct work near gas pedal/tranny tunnel. Hard to find knowing where it is.

I have no experience wit the 60's but what I do on my '75 VJ40 is remove the "engine" fuse. This circuit provides the power to my HEI coil. No power, no spark. Hope this helps.

That is a good idea. How about put in a known bad engine fuse in place? They could easily pull the fuse cover and pop another one in there in seconds.

On my '71 fj55 I set up a kill switch that interrupted the coil circuit, grounding it I think. Switch was hidden under dash someplace. Pretty easy to get around but I was looking for anything that would be an extra obstacle. Since the stolen 60 post I've been thinking about this again myself and have decided to go a little more secure with a gear shift lock (it's ordered and on the way). I also pull my engine fuse when leaving the truck at a trail head etc.

I have heard of some people installing a fuel line cut off valve. I thought this was pretty clever. It allows the truck to be driven as far as the fuel in the carb bowl and the line but not the tank. You get maybe a mile or so then the truck dies just as if it had run ot of gas and wont start. Should be pretty confusing to the thief and hopefully not worth trying to rig a bypass.

What iv done in both my BJ60 and BJ74 is simply install a push button momentary on button switch, open up the steering column find the trigger wire for the bendix, cut it and splice the button in line…
Then mount the button in an unassuming position, so to start the truck you need to turn the key AND press the hidden button… that being said there are ways around it, however, its still a good way to go.

Also I have (at least on my bj60) tied a string around the rearmost relay in the relay cluster under the steering wheel. If im planning on parking in a bad part of town, simply grab the string pop the relay out and take it with you. With out that guy the EDIC will automatically go to cut off after the engine starts…

Conversely also thinking of getting one of these:

Switch in a locked Tuffy console seems the way to go. I know this isn't the diesel section but how do you have a kill switch for a diesel? If they can get it turned over then the thing is running. I guess a lock on the transmission would keep them from shifting.

What is the EDIC?

So, I do quite a few kill switches, every single one of my cars in the past 15 years have been switched.

One of my favorite things to do is fuel pump relays and ignition coil, the car will crank and crank but won't ever fire.

A common one I've done for friends is to place a switch (usually I had to make a bracket) that is a two position push button type under the boot for the 4speed (or whatever car) so it's TOTALLY invisible.

One of the more involved ones but the most fun I've done was take a mercury positional switch used in some military ordinance and embedded it into the sun visor so to start/run the car the visor had to be moved to a certain position. Easy for this car as it would only have a driver in it and we installed the switch in the passenger side visor.

Just some ideas. I like fully hidden ones like in the boot most.

Hmmmm, I wondered about a mercury switch on a tilt column, but I supposed you would be pooched trying to start on hills. :frown:

Its funny how where you live changes the way you feel about car security. Around here people leave cars unlocked, sometimes even keys in the cars for those that are worth more if it gets stolen... I'd never even feel the need to put a hidden switch in a car around here. Well now that I said that there will probably be a new thread about my cruiser getting stolen tomorrow.
