Excellent work Dan! Can't wait to see it! Very fitting ending to the project, with the train passing by!

Damn that is so pretty... Can't wait to see it in person.

I also would love to trade rigs for a tour around the block to compare the driveability. Not too many 3B-Ts to compare mine too. I forgot to let you try mine as promised at the last meeting. We got too into talking about Next Projects!

Is that top a 100% OEM copy? I am building bows for mine and want to see if I can improve upon the OEM design at all since I am having a custom top made... I would love to look that over as well. Beers are on me!

Absolutely. Are you going to be at the rally?

Not sure, but I think Ehsan's tops were pretty spot on.

Yep, 31MPG. That includes some light wheeling. Little ways in on Spring Creek today. It wheels as well as it drives on the highway!

Also, TurboDiesel69: one other thought on the engine location question: I would do a 1" body lift if I did it again, just to allow the engine and transmission to tuck higher in the frame rails. On this late model body it wouldn't be enough to flat belly the truck, but it would be better. This T-case hangs down more than I'd like, and the skid plate makes it look worse (not too bad though, really).

That's it. I need another Cruiser to do a 3B Turbo install on. Or 13B-T. Or 1HZ-T :hhmm: I'm tired of 15-17 mpg in my Tundra and 12 mpg in my FJ40.

Matt,

I feel your pain.. I now have a '94 80 for the winter when I am working on the 44 and already the fuel gauge depresses me. I may have a complete turboed 2B with h41 ready this winter if you are serious about the swap...

Well, I don't mean to claim to drive the most powerful 3B on the planet, but....

oh no 1.webp

So, that's not great. It blew out at roughly 3lbs of boost on the way to visit Grandma today. It smokes a LOT normally aspirated, and the EGTs are WAY higher. Amazing! I patched it temporarily with some epoxy and gorilla tape, and drove it the rest of the way and then back (roughly 60 miles total). So obviously I need to order some silicon hoses to replace that stuff....

But here's the interesting bit:

Why is there that much oil in the intake post turbo? The turbo is freshly rebuilt, and the oil on the dipstick hasn't moved a spot for the last 1000+ miles. I will likely take the truck to the diesel shop in Denver (luckily, it's the same diesel/turbo shop as Albuquerque) to see what's up. I wish I had the spare T3 up here with me, just to swap them for a while.

Either way, here's a pretty picture of the cruiser on Grandma's driveway.

Wow... That's a lot of oil in the intake... have you checked the rest of the pipe to see if that is consistent inside the whole thing?

I don't remember, but do you have the 'PCV' pipe (forget what to call it - breather maybe?) rerouted into the air cleaner instead of onto the front driveshaft? that could be it...

Not yet. I will when I replace the intake though.

Nope. We installed the uber rare self oiling driveshaft. ;)

I puts out a drop or two every so often, but much less than I was expecting. At least, judging by the drops on the floor...

Odd... My pipe is dry a a bone (turbo outlet to intake). The other pipe, not so much!

Weak. I'm going to take it to Central Motive Power tomorrow to see what they say.... Trying to figure out how to get the spare T3 up here, just in case...

What are you up to tomorrow?

Ordered the replacement intake parts from BoostController.com LLC - America's Source for High quality turbo boost controllers, silicone hose, and more performance products - 877-836-6155- precision boost control. Turbosmart Warehouse Distributor and the first box got here wicked quick, but with a 45 degree instead of a 90 degree elbow.

The second box also got here wicked quick, so it's all back together and not leaking again. It really is amazing how much the lowered boost raises the EGTs. It's counter-intuitive, but it's true: boost lowers EGT (at least, at these boost levels).

I can't give the guys at boostcontroller a good enough review. This tubing looks excellent, and their service through the mixup was fantastic (they even had FedEx come pick up the box at my house--which is no small feat up here, it's 50/50 on FedEx finding the place).

And just because I can.... the stable in CO right now.

I might cry when I give this back to Dad. 31MPG bests the faux-lux, and it is simply so much fun to drive!

I think an HJ45 is missing from the scene, no?:hhmm:

Indeed it is. It is sitting 500 miles south in NM (and yes, it's time for it to get some lovin') at the moment. I will probably do the work on it down there, unless I can find a cheap (pretty much free) enough place in the Denver area to haul it up and work on it. Also, would have to find a place with access to a welder at a minimum. So I'm guessing it'll be easier to keep it down in NM until it's on the road and it can come home to live in CO for good.

Also not pictured: the :princess:'s CRV, or her nasty awesome '85 4-runner. The CRV was away in town that day, and the 4-runner lives in California where she works.

I'd be okay if you kept the CRV pics to yourself...

Haha agreed.

I am loving the progress Dan! Any word on why there was oil in the intake?

Deal. No CRV pics.

No word on the oil issue, I haven't had time to get it into the turbo shop to let them look at it. I don't really want to do much to it, since it *should* be under a warranty so they can look at it better. That said, there's definitely oil in there, but it's not constant, nor a constant amount. Very odd.

Got to see this truck on the ride this weekend. Pretty sweet. Dan, I have that much oil in my intake pipe as well, and I suspect the turbo seal is a goner. I have yet to drain the intercooler, but I'm suspecting there will be a good bit in there when I do.

I drove the truck and talked to Central Motive Power in Denver. They will fix the turbo if they find a problem with the turbo, so I'll try to get it off and get it to them next week. But it's not a huge concern, by any means. If your truck is doing it too, then I'm not going to panic and keep putting the miles on it until I get the spare turbo up here to get this one off for them to look at. Especially since this truck just doesn't smoke much at all, it must not be a constant seep.

It's the little things that take all the time....

But in the meantime, here's a video to watch:
