My Brother is going to look at a 2005 GX for me today with 156k. If it looks good Ill go buy it. The dealer seems straight up so far I want to give him a list of things to make sure to look for. So far Ive got:

2005 Lexus GX470 FINANCING AVAILABLE

Smells: Smoker? Pets?

Check systems:
HVAC, blows cold/hot, vent controls work
Adjustable Height Suspension, raises and lowers, Sport and Comfort Modes work
4x4 engages in hi and lo
Audio works and sounds OK
All windows and sunroof open and close
Lights

Rust:
Undercarriage/frame
Door jams
Windshield

Matching tires

Interior:
Seats in good shape, no leaning, tears
Dash cracked?

Drive:

Alignment ok
Brakes
Shifts smooth
Rattles and Squeaks?

Leaks:

What else am I missing?
A few things from my buying experience, does it have more than one key, they are a little pricey but 1010 Keys is a good resource. If the tpms light is on, it's probably at least one bad sensor. The dealer would air the tires to the proper psi to get that light off if they could. I had 3 bad ones but I just bypassed the system, i find the systems too temperamental anyway.
Obviously no lights on the dash , CEL or otherwise.
Sunroof function, and does it rattle down the road. Drive it first to check for the rattle before checking for operation because operating it often temporarily fixes the rattle.
None of these are reasons not to buy but maybe good for some negotiating.
Good luck!!
PS don't forget to check the rear AC, not usually a problem but I imagine they can be pricey.

I didn't read every post here (seems like the group hit all the details for you) but another "soft item" that might be worth considering is the wife/girlfriend factor. My wife didn't much care for my '92 Land Cruiser due to it's aged/period look (cloth, darn-near perfect interior that I absolutely loved). However, she has no qualms at all about getting into my lifted GX to head out for a trail run, run to the store, whatever.

Happy wife, happy life.....truth!

Thanks guys,

I got a vehicle history report from the dealer one accident in 2017 but otherwise okay. I looked up the service records on lexus.com just regular service for the first 60,000 miles and a drive shaft replacement.

Lol agreed - currently I negotiate the order of mods with my wife, I had to do the rear door gas strut before I could do sliders, now have to tint the windows before I can get an awning LOL, I’m not complaining!

you will pay about $5000 more for a more inferior car. don't worry it doesn't cost a penny more to maintain the GX470. that's what scares people most I guess, that's what I used to think 6 months ago when I almost bought a rusted 06 4runner V8 for 16k but luckily the dealer sold it to someone else who was there earlier in the day. I got my GX for $12k and its far cleaner, its like a brand new car.

Hey Guys,

Looked at an '04 with 133k today, dude wants $8200 out the door. A few things came up that I was hoping you folks could comment on. At around 20 mph there a shudder in the tranny, like it doesn't want to shift smoothly from 1st to 2nd, then smooths out as you accelerate? Also the seems to be a wobble in the steering wheel, may like the tires need to be balance, its not bad just noticeable. Next there's a bit of a rattle of the 4x4 shift knob driving along. Otherwise seems OK, not the cleanest due to the light interior, but drove pretty well otherwise.

thanks

Look up “rumble strips” on t4r. Most have cured it from adding Instant Shudder and draining/filling the tranny.

Yeah, Probably the right call. Thanks

If you noticed all of that in one test drive, you might want to steer clear.

FWIW, if I bought another, I'd get a grey or black interior. My tan/brown is a PIA to keep clean. It would also be nice to upgrade my steering wheel and it's near impossible to match the greyish brown from the tan interior. There are some pretty sweet black wheels out there.

On a GX470 if it throws the CEL do you still retain ATRAC? My boss just bought an 08 with under 200k miles….it has bad cats and has a Christmas tree lighting on the dash. Trac/vsc, all that stuff. Does that mean it has no ATRAC either? I’m thinking if that’s the case and you get a CEL in the middle of a trail or while driving on a snowy highway….that’s a pretty s***ty system that can put you in harms way. Anybody know for sure? Is ATRAC gone bye bye when you get a CEL or is it still functional?

if you are that worried, get a code reader, read code, clear code. It takes less than 30 seconds to do this.

I’ve had this happen on the trail due to bad cats. I would get P0171, or 174, or 402, or 420/430. After I got new cats, no more lights.

Plus I always turn CDL on when I hit dirt, so some of those lights turn on.

The GX will disable ATRAC/VSC/ABS for any CEL. It's a crazy/annoying system to remove safety features due to a CEL - probably Toyota's way of making you take the rig in to get it fixed. As HomerCanyonero mentioned, just get a code reader and clear the code, or fix the issue causing the code.
