I am looking to replace my '99 radio with a more modern option. My list of needs is below...

Android compatability.
Bluetooth for calling
Bluetooth for audio connection
Navigation from connectivity with phone
Back up camera availability

Any and all suggestions are appreciated and I haven't looked into this for quite some time and really have no idea what is available.

Checkout Soundstream double din headunits. They have good prices (under $200) and I believe have all your requirements you listed.

I'm partial to Kenwood, but they cost like twice the price unless you find a used unit.

pioneer nex 7201 is what im deciding on for my truck

Kenwood or Pioneer.
I like Kenwood, but Pioneer is probably the best in the game.

If you have a wireless Android auto compatible phone, Pioneer doesn't support it yet. You'll need a JVC or Kenwood I believe.

Android 9 is supposed to have wireless andrAnd auto built in for other OEMs, but Ive had it since April on my Pixel 2 XL.

I have not been happy with my JVC. The sun washes out the display during the day. I must always shield it with my hand to see what is going on.

I have the Pioneer Avic-8200NEX in mine and I have been loving it. Hit's all your needs and then some. I use Apple Carplay, but it also has Android Auto. Plus, the native mapping feature works without your phone, so you can use the nav when you don't have cell reception.

I've been running this same unit for a few years and have zero complaints. It does everything well.

I went with the little brother 4100nex and I love it. I use Android auto which is by far my favorite feature. As far as maps I just download an offline map to my Google maps before I head out of town. Saves directly to my phone and Android auto has no issues picking it up when offline.

Jensen 7020 under $300. I think I put a hack in my thread to allow control while driving.

I’ve had it for three years now. It’s been great and has tons of features. I have a 32gb usb drive with endless movies for the kids. Green color matches perfectly with dash.

I have a Kenwood ddx9904s really love it but due to a very poor installer it really screwed some things up on my truck. I think the installation is just as important as the head unit itself. I required a dash camera and to be able to turn in the backup camera as I drove along. Those two things ruled out a lot of units on the market. Also didn't want a cd/DVD but almost no one offers that yet. I am having the stereo reinstalled next Tuesday and I hope that will solve many problems I'm having.

Is there a way to install a modern "Car Play" unit into later year 100's that have the A/C controls intrigrated into the radios?
I installed a Seicane 10" touch screen in my LX470. The set-up looks good. The A/C controls work very well through via touch screen controls. That said the rest of the system is glitchy. It's really like having two stereos. The AM/FM radio on the stereo work ok. When you switch over to the Apps section of the stereo, you literally turn off the existing stereo to turn on the App functions for Pandora, Apple music, etc.

Another vote for the Sony XAV-AX100. After messing with a Joying unit and a JVC that I didn't like, I settled on the Sony and I like it the best even though it has the fewest features (but still has every feature you listed). One of the things I love is how compact the physical unit is. Aside from the screen, the body of the unit is single DIN size, which makes it much easier to install and route cables:

It's also got one of the best volume knobs I've ever seen/felt on a modern stereo. It's a solid, machined and knurled piece with very positive feeling detents and a good amount of resistance.

I also like that you can toggle on the rear camera on command, instead of having to put it in reverse.

It doesn't have a lot of extras: Only one USB input, no AUX inputs, no video out etc. All of the extra functions are done through your phone via Android Auto/ Car Play. If that works for you, it's a great option.

I understand what you mean regarding the glitchy app switch over and that is definitely a problem for me. I have that similar issue in my DD Ford F-150 and it sucks. So may be indicative of the way the software is written. Very poor for sure. Are there other options and the biggest question I have is the A/C controls.

I had the same experience with J

I had the same experience with JVC in my 2000. Too much sun washout. I replaced it with a Pioneer NEX, can wholly recommend that line, no washout and sounds great.

If anyone wants a year-and-a-half old double-DIN touchscreen JVC (all the usual features, works perfectly), message me. I'll give it to a 100-series owner for $25 (by Paypal) to cover shipping and me packing it up.

Merbesfield- I am not aware of any other App or stereo on the market currently which will give you the AC functionality you are looking for. There are a lot of threads on this topic and most applications seem to be going to a Double Din set-up and keeping the existing AC controller. In my case I also have the Mark Levinson set up to deal with.
