For the main pulley I just left it in gear and with the parking brake was able to get pretty close. Not the best method, but no issues so far. If I had the SST to hold the pulley I would have been able to get that in there, and there was enough space for my largest torque wrench.

I have the SST, one I made actually. If you want to borrow it no probs.

;)

Cheers

Any updates on this build? Its 👌.
I have an old pzj77 wagon and the FT swap is something I dream of doing.

So instead of cutting into a new bumper to get it to fit I switched over to a long neglected project of the front hubs.

It came with the notoriously unreliable power locking hubs, which of course only one of the 2 worked most of the time. So over a year ago had purchased some used manual hubs, and everything to rebuild them. Then the engine blew up and they sat on the shelf for a while so the first step was dusting off the parts

After a little bit of sand blasting they were painted with engine enamel (to withstand the brake rotor temps), and then new slotted brake rotors were attached with new studs.

Did you replace the spindles? Or, did you use a spacer kit?

So it has been a little bit, but just hit a milestone so seems like time to update the build thead:

(Note the timing belt light came on just 5km earlier)
I am shooting to make it past 500k.

So in the last 6 years a 100,000km, it has been doing what Landcruiser do best and being a reliable vehicle that does anything asked of it.
From hauling around a trials bike(fit it inside):

To towing around a boat:

Congrats, mine just turned 300k and the T-belt light came on at the same point. I changed mine 30k ago but now I got the urge to change it again! That damn light!

So to catch up on the building side from where i left off, back in 2018 I made a fan shroud to improve the cooling a little bit.
First I optimized the design with CAD ( Cardboard Aided Design):

And then transfered it into metal:

Finished up and painted and it has worked pretty good so far:

Personally I liked the wheels before but the ones now look great also.

Well I actually changed the timing belt when I swapped in the new engine and then reset the light 20k later, so this was a little more than the recommended time between. That being said the timing belt looked perfect. The v-belts on the other hand not so much as they were still from Japan and probably had 200k on them.
Luckily was able to cross reference to some belts available at the local autoparts store:

So belts are all now new, and that light can be turned back off.

I liked the old wheels as well, but not the tires. I was able to get a set of BFG Trail Terrain tires from a 24MY Tacoma ORP, so the wheels where the best that I could find to match those tires. They are growing on me though.

Wheels: DX4, Rhino, 17x8.5, -18
Tires: BFG Trail Terrain, 265/70R17

Those tires are a pretty big upgrade with a smoother ride, less noise, but still solid off-road performance.

The fit is pretty good with a little bit of sidewall sticking out. The 17" wheel just barely clears the steering knuckle.

I am not up to date on the new Tacoma tire sizes since that all went south of the border but that seems like good size to go with from what I see in the photos.

I always liked the GY Kevlar 16” tire that came out of Canada too and considered saving a set of those for my cruiser when Tacoma production ended in Tx.

Love the updates! It was also awesome to see you in CO. Even if it made my HD envy rage 🤣

Were you ever able to make progress with BP51 tuning? Those shocks look like they would be ok taking a break 🤣

Always good seeing you as well. We need to get our 70 series in the same place for some wheeling next year.

No, haven't made any real progress with getting the BP51 to work. I do feel like the suspension is on deck for getting an upgrade soon just have to decide which way to go BP51, Dobinsons, or something unique.

Never something unique. It’s a leaf spring truck. There is only so much $$$ you can throw at it.

Unless you spring it then the whole world opens up.

I still have those Dobinson springs part# L59-020-R if you are interested.
Could help cut the costs a bit. Used for about 5000 miles. Brand new they are $1140 plus shipping. I am asking for $700.
