hey all !

As some of you might remember, I was working on a little project to turn the back of my LJ73 into a sleeping area for short 2–3 night camping trips.

I finally finished it — and we gave it a try last night. It turned out to be way more comfortable than I expected!

I decided to go with a setup that doesn't require removing the rear seats. Instead, I made the trunk level with the folded rear seats. To achieve this, I needed to raise the trunk floor by about 24 cm. I used two layers of foam for this:
  • The first layer is 20 cm thick, cut to the exact shape of the trunk (including wheel arches, etc.).
  • The second layer is 6 cm thick and slightly wider, to create a stable, level surface.
Since the LJ73 doesn't have a standard body type, I ordered a custom-made mattress (6 cm thick), from a well-known camper mattress producer, cut to the full width of the car and extending from the back of the front seats (pushed fully forward). This gave us a sleeping area of roughly 165 cm in length and 140 cm in width.

The final step was filling the gap between the folded rear seats and the front seats. I used a sleeping platform (also marketed as a rear seat dog platform) that I ordered from China — and it worked surprisingly well.

If anyone’s interested, I’m happy to share all the measurements and drawings.

Here’s the result:
