I've been toying with the idea of adding an OEM Toyota hand throttle cable like Slee sells:

Slee - Interior Products

Anyone have experience with this? What kind of RPM range can you idle at with it?

Does it help take much strain off the batteries when winching? (I fry a Yellow top every few years.)

Are their any cheaper methods or places to get this that can still be reliable?

Thanks!

Big time worth if it you rock crawl as well, adds a tremendous amount of control as you can keep your right foot on the brake in tricky climbs while using hand throttle for controlled forward movement.

I think this mod is essential to adding control to this heavy beast in these conditions.

in an automatic, I don't see the necessity- you can use your left foot on the brake, right on the gas to control speed.

but for winches and whatnot, it should be handy. Though I suspect you could rig something else up pretty easily that would allow you to bump the motor to a given rpm setting w/o the hand throttle. It might not look as cool, however. :)

I've use it for both winching and jumping.

x2.

I haven't tested the range but normally set the RPM at about 2500 when setting up for either of the above. That way I know my batteries are topped off before I get started, that the alternater is producing during, and the batteries can be topped off after - all without me having to be in the cab with my foot on the gas.

Cruise Control

For cruising for chicks in the Mall...:grinpimp:

I have one but haven't found the need for it except for winching.

You can idle at any RPM. Press the pedal and go to the desire RPM and then pull the nob, and it will stay at that RPM.

My hand throttle will go to about 3200 RPM fully pulled out which has always been sufficient. Are you saying that you can also press the accelerator and then lock in whatever you want? I have always used the hand throttle without pressing the skinny pedal first.

If you are part way up a major rock obstacle where you are going to move back quickly and potentially lose ground you really need to keep, then you are going to love your hand throttle.

I have used it in a number of situations where you just don't have the control with your right foot, but can ease the hand throttle up as you slowly let off the brakes. I think it is invaluable - it's one of my favorite mods as it really helps add control in critical situations to a 3 ton beast.

It is in many ways like the starter crawl that manual transmission guys have - you get infinite control that you just cannot deliver with the stupid pedal.

As for winches...don't have one :flipoff2:

I used to do the same thing. Pull the nob to lock the RPM untill I read about the correct way to use it.

You have to actually press the accelerator first. This will losen the wire from the hand throttle, and we you pull the nob it will lock it in that place, therefore keeping the RPM you had.

Try it... mine works this way.

this is a great point........

it looks cool and works well and when you need it it is GOLD. Or you can have an empty space on your dash, if you don't mind not having every Toyota bell and whistle. :) we wont think less of you

My 62 had one and i used it all the time with the Winch. It also doubled as a poor man's cruise control on those long runs on I40.

I definitly am gong to pick one up from Slee.. just have not gotten around to it.

Search the classified sections and you'll find a cheaper ($20), but good quality, option. The vendor is out of stock right now, but keep checking.

It comes in handy at seafoam time as well. :)

What's the deal with this little disclaimer on Slee's site?
*Certain vehicles might need additional parts. Ensure that your throttle assembly has proper mounting points. Contact us for more details.
For $51 and an easy install I may go for it, but if I need other parts and added work I will have to know what exactly is involved.

On page 2 of the instructions it looks like they point out what you need. Basically your pedal needs a 'J' hook on it for this to work. If not, they say you can get a pedal from a late model and swap it.

I'll go home and check if mine has it, in the meantime, dos anyone know what years WOULDN'T have the right pedal? Should my '96 be ok??

Should my '96 be ok??

My understanding is yes.

It sounds like those who don't have it, don't need it or see a need for it, while those that do have it find it useful.

I've got one, but it's just so I can hang out with the cool kids.
