H55F or LS swap for a FJ62 best bang for a buck.

H55F.

x2 depends on your goal. I’ve never heard of someone swapping in an LS and keeping the A440F. H55F should cost less AFAIK so that’s why I voted for it.

x100000 we need to know your goals. Want this to be a reliable DD with more power and parts availability - then go with the LS.

If you want to keep it relatively stock - do the H55F. You can always do the LS later anyways.

Also really depends on your budget and how far you want to go too.

Between the two I'd say LS. I am wrapping up mine (with a 5 speed) and the ability to keep up with traffic is a game changer. Plus being able to easily source parts basically anywhere you go.

Also, if you want a 5 speed just do it when you LS swap it, you already have to source a transmission so you might as well just get a new h55 while you're at it.

So you install a new H55F behind your ancient, worn out 3F-E and it goes south in a few years.
That old 3FE engine ain’t going to last forever.
My vote: save up your money and replace both the engine & transmission.

thanks for the responses. truck will not be a DD, more a weekender. the 3FE is only clocking 155k, i suspect the tranny will go long before the motor goes.

The h55f does make a huge improvement in power feel behind the 3fe. That motor is so robbed of power by the a440! Like 30% of the motor's power is used to spin that old bugger. I seem to have read that somewhere. If money's tight, than h55f is my choice. It'll change that rig tremendously.
Everyone has opinions, this is mine.

Heh I just realized who the OP is. You're welcome to drive mine for a taste of the H55/3FE combo. Also if you're leaning toward transmission swap... keep in mind a brand new H55 might not always be available, if $$ allows you might consider picking one up sooner than later, then swap at your leisure.

@cruiseroutfit typically has H55's in stock and that would be my vote with the caveat your engine is running well. I upgraded my truck with a H55 and running on 33's is great. That said, I also rebuild my 2F with bigger stainless valves and the largest Toyota pistons yielding 4.4L of displacement. Personally, I prefer inline six's and the power delivery is fine with my truck loaded, RTT etc. If one does go with a V8, remember to upgrade the braking system as well to match the power output.

My thought is to swap in an H55 and see how you feel about it. If you do not like it as much as you thought you might I'd sell the motor/trans combo and put an LS with Tremec 4050 5 speed.

I've driven LS/H55, LS/ NV4500 and LS Tremec 4050 and IMHO it is not even a contest.
Good luck whatever direction you take.

Briefly, what are the pros/cons to each of those LS combos? Is the tremec really an improvement that would warrant pulling an H55 that’s already installed?

For pure necessity purposes, if you arent planning on taking any trips longer than 3 hours, and its not a DD id honestly say 3fe/h55f is a good move, especially with a motor with only 155k and i am FAR from a purist.

If you want the truck to be absurdly fun to drive, or want to take long high way trips or trips out of town or daily drive your truck or use it like a modern truck id go with a LS and an automatic.

i manual swapped two 22re minitrucks and the difference it made was pretty crazy and those were with a 4cyl. youd be surprised how much drivability you get from getting rid of the toyota automatic trans. Its not v8 swap levels of power by any means but it is a big difference.

We (My team at CruiserMatt's) have H55f's in stock as well as all parts to convert a 62.
We also carry a full line of LS conversions to make that project as easy/clean as possible. You could also do both LS and H55f, we have several times and it is a nice combo that retains original "feel"

We also do both projects in-house several times a year.

Not to hijack, but I'm gonna hijack. What's your opinion on manual vs auto behind an LS as far as ease of conversion, usability on and off road, and durability. Use would be a hunting rig/ off road/ big road trips (I have a 40 gallon tank in mine and hate stopping).
