title should not say hd55f but h55f

I just bought a used H55f Transmission with the split t-case attached to it still, it came off of a BJ42 or a BJ60 if im correct. I read that i need to get longer bolts to mount it to the t-case, but its already mounted... As far as i know, all i need todo is to attach the thing to my bellhousing and thats it... right?
I know i have to change up my driveshafts to make it work.

My cruisers current specs are 1984 FJ60 with a 2FE. original block with 300,000 miles

thanks! i couldn't find the post i was looking for, thats why i made the post. but yours seems to cover what i was looking for!

if the trans is from a BJ. it will not work with an FJ. the trans input shaft is all wrong.
you can dis-assemble the trans and swap the input shaft but at that point it may be easier to just get the correct trans.
if the trans is from a BJ4? it maybe worth some $$'s if it has the 40 top plate instead of the 60 top plate.

1 or 2 pics will solve the questions above.

i hope your wrong!!!

You can get that tranny rebuilt and a new input shaft swapped in. Then you're golden. I would not install without a new bearing kit anyway. While there you can check syncros and similar.

But it might be easier to sell this for $1500 and buy a brand new H55f for $2000 or whatever they sell for now.

they go for 3k now and id still need to get the split t-case for it as im pre 1985. im not sure if the bj60's t-case will fit on the same h55f

It will, but your existing t case will fit too.

I did this swap back in the day to my '84 FJ60, and that same transmission still is in use today in my FJ62.

i thought the h55f wont fit with a pre 1985 t-case? right now im trying to sell it to a guy complete who wanted a 5speed. hopefully he still wants one, i want this thing gone

I found one of my ancient threads and it has references to others.

T-Case Rebuild done

I did use a later case, but it is not necessary. I just happened to buy one in really good shape and so used it.

Put an H55f in my 1984 'cruiser back in 2000. Replaced bearings/seals once since then as preventative maintenance, but its a good transmission. As I recall, my biggest issue was that the length of the tranny/transfer was shorter than the late 1984 stock tranny, so I had to have both front and rear driveshafts re-manufactured to the correct length. The 2H/4H/4L shift lever was pretty far forward but did barely have enough throw to go into gear once I cut a 1/2 inch off the threads to have the knob clear. I also had to swap the shaft flanges. Its a great upgrade once you've got it figure out, I'm still driving it today!

it kills me that what i thought was a gold mine isnt.... it was too good to be true. if i replace the main shaft with a correct one thats $500, rebuild kit is another 500$, letting a shop do it thats another what.. $200? id like to sell it as is to somebody who needs this type for their bj cruiser. i cant even find one online for a bj to reference to the price to ask by. but that just says how hard these are to find now... :(

You gotta lick your wounds and move on. Not the last $1500 you'll toss away!

But my guess is, someone will buy it. If they can work on transmissions themselves, an input shaft swap won't be too hard.

Put it in the classifieds and see what happens. Long shot, but if there's a Canadian with a BJ60 that isn't rusted out, this is a nice piece.

I thought new H55fs were $2200 these days. I'll have to ask @beno when he's back in business.

The very early 81-82 t case does NOT have the provision for 5th gear oiler. Every '83 and later case I have taken apart seems to have that provision, and thus are H55F compatible (with minor mods).

ok, late night research led me to this, and if anyone can confirm this id appreciate it, Im under the impression that i can use this h55F from a BJ60 on my FJ60 IF i correct the input shaft to the 10 spline, and im under the impression that the teeth count on the gears wont give me any issues with this swap.

I just bought a new H55F for about $2500 after taxes. Dealer cost is about $2050, MSRP is almost $2900 before taxes. I swapped out the 60-series top plate w/ a 40-series & I'm swapping the input shaft for a 3B version this weekend. Sounds like we should work out an input shaft trade? Here's a picture of the 60-series & 40-series top plate:

I'll post pictures of the input shafts side by side this weekend if get to it. One more thing not mentioned above... the bearing retainers are different too. There's more distance for the clutch fork/throw out bearing to travel. I'm swapping that part too.

id be down for a trade, looks like its expensive as heck for these stupid shafts, but i was not aware of the different bearing retainer sizes, id have todo more research on that.
