Edit - reread the thread and see where you show the change in rpm Hi/Low and reference 5th. Sorry bout that. So you have really low diff gears and possibly aftermarket transfer case gears as well. It could be a good thing once you map it out. Possibly you could swap with someone who's running 35's.

I agree with others that you're stuck in 4Lo.

Gotta ask (sorry) - you are shifting the 4 speed out of right?

We can't see the 3/8" link between the shift lever and the 4Lo shift arm. Please take a couple of pictures from the right hand side.

Is it possible for the shifting fork to be disconnected inside the TC? Maybe the bolt holding the shifting fork to the shaft was loose and allowed it to slip down. It's a known problem on bench assembly.

You can tell the PO has had the boots off (implying transmission work) because they are bolted through the carpet instead of under it. If the PO took the time and money to use 2 factory fog light switches, we should give him the benefit of the doubt about a good reason for such extreme gearing.

Yes transfer is in 2HI I have wheeled it a couple times and had it in 4LOultiple times and am definitely in 2HI

So you must have super low ratio in low. If you can feel the difference between H and L, then that would put the "stuck in low" suggestion to rest.

If you look back I posted pictures of the difference between 5th in 4lo and 2hi. So I am NOT in 4LO. If it was something that simple than I wouldn't have asked for help.

I would like to know if anybody has heard of gearing down the split transfer case.

usually if there is a change in gearing it would be for a lower range on the low side. no reason to change the high side when you have low already. if you want to go lower change the low side.

diff gearing does have an effect on overall speed

my other thoughts are after you are positive you are not in low range in the transfer case.

do you really have a 5 speed? do the rpm's drop going from 4th to 5th and if so how much?

The RPM' drop about 500 going from 4th to 5th so it is a different ratio. I agree on changing the low side before bothering with anything else. I do know the diff gears will change the speed of the vehicle but they change the physical speed it is traveling at and not what is shown on the speedometer.

I think I'm over thinking this. Now I think the tach isn't reading the RPM's correctly just based on listening to the motor and how it feels.

Ok, I believe 10% under is the only available ration for lowering the high side of the transfer case. So Either you have very low gears in the axles or your tach is way off.

Alright, so I have been digging around and I am pretty sure something is up.

So I have a 2F with a H55 installed from PO. My question is where should I be speed/RPM wise. I'm pushing 4k in 5th just to do 60mph. I'm fairly certain that the diffs have been geared down for larger tires because I am always about 5 under what my tach says but that doesn't affect the tach readout.

Any ideas?

Data point. 4.11 gears + 33" tires + H55F in 5th gear @ 70 mph (GPS) the tach is at 2500 rpm.

Did you test drive this Cruiser before purchase?

Not sure why you believe the diff gears couldn't cause the high rev? Doesn't matter if it's small tires, 10% reduction in transfer, 4.88 gears, or driving in first, they all work together and cause rpm change.

Change any item and rpm' s change.
