Wesley contacted me a few months back to set up some spa time for his 40 here at the shop.

We've conversed for years on Mud so I knew he's been into 40s for a long time.

We came up with a plan and he dropped it off yeaterday.

First things first, this is by far the nicest FJ40 thats ever been dropped off here. Lockwood's 45 red SWB would be the nicest 40 series but as for 40s, this one wins.

I spent the day yesterday pulling a 3.70 out of a 60 axle I bought for this purpose a few months ago. Drums were hopelessly frozen so I had to cut the drums off. Not fun.

After that I sat down and spent a few thousand bucks on parts while I sipped on a Spotted Cow purchased this week while I traversed Wisconsin.

So today I took it out for a long drive to see what I thought it needed verses what Wesley thought it needed.

First impressions is that it's a damn fine 40. Very tight. Quiet. Valves are clattering a bit but that is on the list.

Power is great. Transmission is smooth and quiet. I'll put some Redline into the drivetrain to really quiet it up.

Road test went really good. Clutch is a bit out of adjustment and the brakes suck but both of those were on the list.

Changing out the OME springs and barbell shackles was on the list but I actually like the way this thing rides with them and the Fox 2.0 shocks he has.
Track jump was very good.

There is a rattle in the passenger door I'm going to have to get yall to help me fix. You can hear it in the video.

After I got back from the ride I put it up on the rack and tore into it. First job will be swapping the 4.11s fit 3.70s.

Crazy. It sat in the shop last night and it was dry as a bone under it.

One track jump and it's bleeding from the back of the transfer case. I got @orangefj45 sending me a new Speedo housing

First Bolt I pulled and I'm bleeding which pro-rates that hour into time and 1/2.

Wes contacted me about a month ago. He was close to my neck of the woods looking for advice on a good spot from which to watch the Blue Angels Air Show.
So I dropped him a few pins. Maybe he will post up a photo or two. Anyway he might have mentioned that his 40 would be heading to Tilda Bogue. I have been waiting for this to drop.

3rd member swaps

*tech tip*

If you are swapping Land Cruiser 3rds from a vehicle that has locking hubs, use the front differential in the rear of the receiving vehicle and the rear to the front.

Why?

If the hubs are not locked all the front differential does is sit there doing nothing. They are mostly brand new sitting there for 30-40 years getting spun up from time to time on the coast side of the gears.

Also, I use paper gaskets not RTV because it's miserable to ever service one that's been glued together. So due to that cleaning the mating surfaces is critical. Time consuming but way better than pulling it all apart to fix a leak

The front tie rod has seen better days.

The rear bearings are slide hammered out

Thirds are painted. I'll put new pinion flanges and seals in once I have them in the truck

Had to work on a local truck this morning (Powda Blue)

The front will come apart today. One side down.

Whoever built this front axle last was in the minimal grease school.

Maybe a 1/2 a can in the whole side. They don't spin unless your hubs are locked they don't really care but I've always felt that more grease is better to keep contaminates out.

I've never seen one with so much grease in the axle tube that had no 90wt in the knuckles.

Axles all stripped so I'm on to the 2F. I'm about to hang it up for the day. Good progress so far.

This thing has a PowerSurge that I actually sold him years ago that I'm s*** canning for a normal external fuel pump setup

This one was doing great but it's really an over complicated system.

I kinda started it with these things years ago due to past experience with external electric pumps and rock crawlers.

I've not had a single one of these Mosley supplied external pumps fail out of all the ones I've installed to date so I'm all about going simple.
