Thanks Rich...Yes I did the vinyl...it's not perfect but overall I'm pretty happy with the final product..I spent most of yesterday finishing the second pod and getting both pods mounted to the door panels...One of the benefits of using the factory door pocket, it allowed me the drive screws throughout the door panel and the MDF back board of the pods into the factory door pocket holes... I used large washers for support and also drilled two holes into the interior of the pod and bolted the upper section to the door panel... I also recovered the upper edge of the door pocket...the area above the carpet with the same vinyl that I used on the pods ....
It's a shade off the factory color... But it works! I should have them on the truck in a few days... Here's a few more pic's

That looks fantastic and exceeds professional installations that I have seen.

I sure would like a picture of one of the front doors with the door closed. I'm currious as to how much clearance there is between the enclosure and the side of the dashboard.
 
The upper most inside corner is just touching the dash... I missed that measurement by about a 1/16th of a inch so it's putting a 1/2 mark on the pod... I may redo these later but for now I can live with the small mark.
This and the subwoofer enclosure was the first time I've ever worked with fiberglass....and I've learned quite a bit working on these pods. I could redo these in about half the time and have plenty of vinyl left over. The funny thing about this was I didn't even think about the clearance issue until I was installing them .....so I'm lucky they fit...

I should have posted a few days ago before you applied the vinyl, if I had known you were freelancing the design so to speak. Based upon the upward projection it is a very cleaver way to provide more enclosure volume without getting in the way of the dash. Is there anyway you can trim the dash or heat it up and remold that small section of the dash? It only looks to be a small amount you need to gain to completely clear.

I’m still amazed how good it looks!!!

Thanks for the idea.... I'll try a heat gun and see if that works... Its one of many faults I have ...working on the fly and figuring things out, both good and bad as I go.

You guys are nuts. I can only imagine how much time this took, considering it took me and a buddy two full days to replace my speakers and keep the OEM look. Cheers to that crazy dedication. Gotta have good tunes!
 
Trust me..I'm in no hurry to redo these any time soon. It took me two days just to clean up the shop, as I had MDF and bondo dust covering everything and in every corner...
The payoff is huge... Great tunes and good looks for all the pods built by Mudders in this thread

FIVE MONTH UPDATE:
Five months later and all I can say is... still loving the tunes! The CDT door speakers are great, but that Mephis Audio sub is off the hook! This system would not be the same without the strong, punchy bass. Still loving it!

(Not missing the stock map holders either.)
 
Rich, just curious... Your front speaker pods, is all the weight supported by those screws that are going through the board on the door panel?
 
You might be talking about my pods above on this page.. if so..I used the existing holes in the door panel to center the pod on the door. Then drove 5 sheet metal screws through the pod and panel into the door.

Lou: Good deal, yes I was wondering about yours, sorry for the confusion.... Im installing some in the stock location today, but i do believe Im going to work on a setup similar to yours in the downtime.. Im thinking a 6.5-8 similar to your mount, a 4" in the stock 6.5" location and a tweet on the pillar or upper door.

So when you remove your door panels yuo obviously have to remove screws, correct?
 
I do have to remove to screws but hoping that won't be to often.. That sounds like a sweet seatup you're planning...you may find the fit a bit tight with a 6.5 and a 4 on the door panel.. Two things to allow for in your build ...make sure the bottom of the pod is mounted high enough to clear the plasic sill plate and the front edge has enough clearance to close the door and that you allow for dash clearance.. I got lucky and they just touch the dash...but my friend and fellow Mudder had a Audio shop copy my pods and they hit the sill plate and front door edge...they had to be cut down and redo the vinly...big PITA ....
I installed Infinty Kappa 3.5 in the factory dash location and they really fill in as a great mid range speaker which allowed me to build a larger pod for the 6.5 which really produce a great sound. the dash install could be an option if you find the fit to tight for the 4 inch..

Luke, Im glad to hear you used that stock 3-4" location. I have been wondering if that would be a viable option, but I was a bit worried about sound cancellation, but you say it still sounds good? That mid range fill is exactly what I was looking for... How do you have the 3.5" powered? just off of the Headunit? I was also thining about that as an option also...

Thanks for the tips too!! I'm now in the process of figuring out my mounts for a 6.5 in the rear.... stamped steel isn't fun to cut...
 
Yes the headunit is powering the 3.5 in the dash and the 3.5's in the rear factory ceiling location. If you buy a true 3 way component system and install the Mid's in the dash that run off a 3 way crossover I think it would sound great.. If you haven't bought speakers yet check out CDT Audio... Rich turned me on to these....they have every combination you could ever want and great customer sevice.... For the rear doors I ended up cutting a fairly large opening and screwing a square piece of 1/8 inch ply with a opening for the speaker...this made it so much easier then trying to screw the speakers to the sheet metal.... I used a MDF ring covered in vinyl on the door panel to help with depth clearance.....

I am getting my Focal splits next week and I have a question regarding door pods (which is the route I might take if the mounting depth of the woofers is too great fro the OEM location).. Would the lack of volume in a door pod as opposed to a normal door cavity not negatively affect the performace of the speaker? I see that Rich's set go all the way through into the door but Lou's set are enclosed..

Maybe it's a dumb-ass question but I'm not super clued up on these issues.. Possibly a 6.5" speaker doesn't need all the volume of a door cavity? The results you guys are getting with your door pods probably speak for themselves I guess..?
