CHEFFJ! Those are perfect panels!

What kind of bolts did you use to secure them to the door? Did you drill new holes? I can't find bolts that screw into the stock clip holes. I want to be able to secure my interior panels with stainless bolts instead of 15 year old yellow and maroon plastic clips.

Thanks to all. But I doubt these will ever go into production. Not cost effective, unless of course you are willing to cough up $1500.;)

Machine screws to t-bolts from behind the door panel it self hold the pods to the panel. Then a few self tapping sheet metal screws through both pod and panel into the inner door skin. Not the best design for regular install/removal but works great for now. If I find myself in a position to remove them frequently I will just weld up some nuts to the inner skin to match the threads of the machine screws.

I decided to use the factory door pocket and mold the door pocket to the speaker pod with fiberglass. The blue pattern will be 1/4 inch MDF covered in matching vinyl....basically a copy of ChefFJ.....thanks for helping to simplify the plan. This should become the official door speaker thread

Lou,

I've been away from MUD for a while and am just reading up on all the new posts. I love the direction you are taking this! I wanted to do something like this, but could never quite figure out how. From what I read, adhering fiberglass to plastic can be kinda tricky. The article I read said that you want to drill multiple holes in the plasic and then put the fiber on both sides of the plastic so that the fiber is adhering to fiber and the plasic is just along for the ride.

Keep us updated! Thanks for the pics!

(p.s. Nice Speakers!)

Thanks Rich....I did not know there was a issue.. but do have a plan B ....which is to inclose the end of the door pocket and shape that end to match the fiberglass speaker pod... Two separate pieces looking like one...

I'm getting tired of driving my 80 without tunes, so I got busy on my front door speaker pods..using 1/4 inch MDF as a base.... A hot glue gun makes quick work of setting the dowels the balsa wood frame and the wire mesh...
Stapled a old tee shirt over the frame and got the first coat of resin on them. Fiberglass and bondo to follow.

Rich, they are about 4 1/4 inches at the highest point.... The only thing I would change would be to recess the speaker.... I may be able to do it but I'm not sure if the router bit I bought will cut wide enough to clear the grills. I may do another pod if the future if I can't recess the grills..... But for now i'll get these done and see how they look. I've learned a lot so next time around these will be a breeze.

You got me thinking about the size of the pods so I made another set last night..... They still look big but they are 1/2 inch lower and do not extend up as far and will have a recessed grill as will the rear door rings. Second time around took 1/4 of the time..

That's awful nice of you, Lou.... I'll keep it in mind. I was checking out your write up on that FJ55 you had and all I have to say is WOW! You sure built one heck of a nice rig!

Those are pretty.
